Before I sign up for any of the usenet groups I'd like to ask a question. Do I need to take the same precautions as I do with torrents (firewalls, peerguardian, moblock, etc)? If I do what programs do you suggest?

None, except a firewall and anti-virus.
But that's just standard issue for doing anything on the internet.
