I bought a used 2001 Mercedes ML320 in blue. I searched around a lot, shopped around and I found my car on a lot that really only sells newer models, and I made a somewhat rushed purchase. With that aside, the car isn't all that I thought it was. The mechanical condition is perfect, and the one physical blemish I found is going to be fixed by the dealer. But, I did make the purchase in the evening and I didn't really notice some scuffs on the bumper and near the keyhole, but whatever, right? The problem is that online, the car is said to have heated seats, windows, a towing kit, floor mats, and a roof rack. When I went to pick my keys up today, I asked them to show me how to use all of the features, and the dealers told me that it didn't have those options. I wouldn't have made my purchase last night if I knew those things, I would have weighed my options some more and at least slept on it. Plus I HATE the color. Everyone else likes it, but I think it's pretty blah.
So my question is - what can I do about the features problem? They obviously didn't tell the truth on the website, and I didn't check last night, because I was more concerned about having my mechanic look at the engine, etc. I just assumed that it had the features they said it had. Can I make them do something about it? It's about 1000-1600 dollars worth of features, I am assuming. My friend is a Land Rover / Jag dealer and he says those options are very expensive. Can I get them to give me a portion of that value in cash or paint my car for free? I didn't buy the car "as is". It has a warranty, and I haven't taken it off the lot yet because it has to have the CD player rewired. What should I do? There are other better looking cars around, but I don't know if I can get such a good price on them, and I don't know how many miles or mechanical problems I would end up with. The car I bought is kind of low in the mileage.
Never - Okay, but are you just assuming that because it sounds logical or do you really know that that's a fact? Because the guys at the dealership as well as my friend told me I had 72 hours to back out. I just want to make sure. They don't have any other 2001 MLs on their lot, they sell mostly newer cars there so I can't trade. But I would definitely swap a new paint job for the missing features.
kv893t - Yes, that's exactly what I have! =) I came home from the dealership today, and printed out the ad, then highlighted all of the missing items. I'm not angry or anything yet, so I'm not quite at the point of taking it to court. I just either want some $ value back, a paint job, a swap for a similar car, or just refund my money since I haven't moved it from the lot yet. It's a good car, just an ugly color and missing features. Do you really think this problem would hold up in court, though? I wonder. Hope it doesn't go that far!
Never - I see what you're saying. I agree too, I fully expect the dealers to behave this way, although I do have somewhat of an inside connection that will help me tomorrow. I see your point, though. It's not that I don't even want to own the car, I just feel like I should be compensated for the details. I'm still pretty sure I have the 72 hours to give it back, but that's not really what I want to do, anyhow, although I'm not sure. I really am wondering what you think about the car. Did you look at it? Do you like it and think I got a decent deal considering the mechanical condition being so good?
Alfredb - Well a cooling off period would apply to someone who took the car home, even though it may be a myth. I didn't take it away yet. But I still see your point about the lying ads, that is true, dealers do it all the time I guess. But anyway, how do you like the car I got? Do you think it's nice considering the mechanical condition? I'd like to hear your opinion.
