Used Canon Rebel XT DSLR or a high-end point-and-shoot?

In your opinion, which is better?
I'm looking into purchasing either a used Canon Rebel XT or a very high-end point-and-shoot camera (like the two in the links below). My price range is only about $200 - $275, hence why I would be purchasing an outdated, used camera.
(I would be buying a used camera outfit with no additional lenses, just what is included in an ebay lot)
I may want to study photography in college. But, right now, I'm more concerned about picture quality.
I've been using film SLRs for a short while.
Anyway, right now, I'm mainly concerned about image quality. Which do you think would be better?
An older DSLR or a new point-and-shoot?
I know that it all lies in the hands of the photographer, but I'd love to hear your personal experiences with the Rebel XT and image quality. I looked for reviews, but most were from when the camera was first released and thought to be the "best thing around."
Thank you very much for providing input. :)
