Used Buying tips

Hi all,
After living in Italy for the past year and a half, and with the weather finally being what it should be, Im hard pressed to think of a reason NOT to pop my Duke cherry and finally fulfill the dream of owning a Ducati.

So... I've been searching around most of the Italian used bike sites and have spied a few deals. Problem is, Im not the most mechanically experienced guy on the block, so I could use a few pointers on what to look out for when going to see the bikes.

The top contenders at this point are:
A: 2003 996 S with 11000 Km
B: 2005 749 with 3120 Km
C: 2003 749 DARK with 12100 Km
D: 2007 1098 with 13600 Km (Although this one sounds to good to be true selling for 5600 Euro)

The 1098 is my fav. but Im also keen on the 996 S and have read good things about it, but I would settle for the 749 (havent found any 999's at a good enough price yet) and the Dark looks like its in mint condition. All this being said, I have heard that one should beware of Older Dukes with low mileage as the they can develop issues from under use. Is this true?

As for the others, I feel comfortable with the amount of mileage on them as my Hornet has 11600 Klicks on it and it feels great!

Anyway, any advice is most appreciated!
Cheers,
J

Suggest you stick to the golden rule for buying used - get the service history in the form of dealer records whenever possible. If the past owner is a DIY type, they should be able to produce parts receipts that sync to the correct service interval by KMs / miles. The most important service aspects might be valve adjustment and cam belt replacement which usually should be done at 10000 kms intervals (depending on model).

Where are you in Italy?
