Use pitch shift pedal to change pitch of voice?

Could i use a guitar pitch shift pedal to raise the pitch of my voice by an octave?
So instead of plugging the input into a guitar could i plug in a microphone and then sing it to it.
Would it work? or would it just sound terrible...
