Well Mr. Retail Manager,
Verizon Wireless does still activate other carriers devices and they are not the most closed when it comes to this. Verizon Wireless was the first wireless carrier to introduce the "open development" idea and then they were the first to activate other carriers devices.
I also know that being an employee (of any level) does not qualify you for free services. You get phones and accessories $75 marked down and receive a 50% discount on your wireless bill. I worked at Verizon Wireless for a long time (no longer do...but the policies have not changed, I have friends who still work there).
