I recently bought a Verizon VX8600 and I was wondering if I would be able to use it on Alltel (like if I received it tomorrow could I take it and have it activated/reflashed/whatever I'd have to do, on the same day that I received it). I've asked a few people this question and I've heard both ways, the Alltel guy I talked to last week said that it would work, but both Verizon people I had emailed said no. I just need a clear answer on the issue (but from reading previous posts, I've come to the conclusion that I may be able to use it when the merger is complete)

If you bought it from Verizon and have any ties with them in any way with this device, it will definitely NOT work.
Most likely, it will not work anyway since 90% of the merger is complete. It will be finalized very soon. Once it's finalized, whichever markets of Alltel's that now belong to Verizon will be owned by Verizon and Alltel will no longer exist in those areas. Where Alltel still remains (or another carrier operates them there), it will rely on their activation policies.
Also, this thread is inaccurately titled...I just noticed it. The phrase "Alltel/Verizon Wireless Merger Questions" would make someone think that they hold equal parts in this relationship. It would make you assume that they are coming together to provide you bigger, better services. THIS IS NOT A MERGER. This is a carrier buyout. There's a difference. Verizon Wireless OWNS Alltel and Alltel will no longer be a company. The services of Alltel will be slowly outdated and discontinued as Alltel customers upgrade or change their plans/services. An example of a merger is Sprint PCS with Nextel. They both are still alive, just owned by an individual carrier.
Even the carriers sometimes confuse the phrases.

nick, i bought the phone from ebay and i have no ties whatsoever to verizon (other than i bought a second-hand verizon phone) and i had seen somebody else post a way for a verizon PDA phone to be used with alltel, so i had thought that if it can be done with a PDA phone why can't it be done with a phone that both alltel and verizon have carried. (it's LG's answer to the razr, for alltel it's the AX8600 and i've come to understand that it's the same exact phone for both companies but with different programming) and i had come to the conclusion from other posts that a verizon phone could be used on alltel but not vice-versa. so i hope that clarifies things a little bit.

Also, Alltel is one of the more "closed" carriers whenever it comes to allowing users to use other non-Alltel CDMA devices. They told me no with the following devices when I tried to activate them 10 months ago (all of which are Verizon): Motorola RAZR, Motorola KRAVE, Motorola KRZR, LG Voyager, LG VX8100, LG VX3200. They rejected everyone and came out with a response stating "Our network does not recognize these devices". Same response from multiple reps. I have activated the Samsung Instinct, LG Glimmer, Samsung Gleam (Sprint), and the Alltel RAZR on Verizon's network successfully multiple times. Verizon has an "open access" network and they're one of the FEW CDMA carriers that do.
With Verizon Wireless you can activate ANY (99% of them work if the meet the specs below) CDMA device from ANY carrier. They MUST meet these requirements:

- E911 capable. Most devices in the last 7 years have this.
- Not PUSH To TALK
- Not a "enhanced device". PDAs DO NOT count as enhanced devices. These devices are rare and if Sprint had an Apple iPhone, it would be considered "enhanced" and not compatible.
- Pass a quality check (over the phone). This is quick and usually is approved within 1 hour. Sometimes, depending on the phone's age, you don't need to do this at all!

Hence why Verizon requires an "approval" process. The approval process takes into consideration for the following:
Has a similar or same model been successfully activated without problems during test runs?
Is it E911 capable?
When did you purchase it?
What is it's original carrier? Are they a Verizon roaming partner?
Those are among the questions the representatives look for when approving requests. I have ONLY seen one or two requests denied whenever I worked for them. It isn't common to get rejected. You probably had a completely incompatible device...therefore, it was rejected.

I just bought an audiovox cell phone model CDM-8910, at a yard sale, to replace a lost phone. I want to activate it on my current Verizon plan. But Verizon is telling me that it is not compatible because it was previously used on Altell network. Is there any way to make this phone compatible with Verizon? Also, is there a way to tell if a used cell phone will be compatible with my current Verizon network?
