Use by date on bands?

Christ Illusion is a stunning album from Slayer that was only a couple of years back and I thought that there was some really good moments on The Cure's 'Wild Mood Swings'.

Appetite was ok for its time
they definitely do not deserve the credit the receive.
and they only really exist in name....
they should have broken up

Appetite for Destruction was a fantastic album. But Axl Rose proved to be one of the biggest wankers ever, and deserves 100% of the shit that GNR get.

Meh, their fanbase (of which I am a meraber) is divided on whether they've abandoned what made them good in the first place or not. The Red Album was pretty shoddy if you ask me, 2 or 3 good Weezer songs on the whole thing. I still think they can make a comeback to their old awesomeness, though (in before massive wave of bashing).

I'll post some up later with a reason why i think they should have broken up years ago.

I'm wondering what people's opinion on the continued relevance of a band like the stones, who ceased to make good music more than 30 years ago.

I find for the most part, banRAB have 3 albums worth of great material in them. There are obviously exceptions, banRAB who have more than one album worth, only one album worth, etc., but the three album rule works really well. Keep in mind too that they might have three great albums, and the rest good but not close to those three.

Hmm, Don't Believe the Truth was a fantastic album in my opinion, but otherwise I agree with you.

Otherwise Metallica, Sabbath and the Stones come to mind

Yes they did. But instead of putting all their good stuff on one or two albums they spread it out over many, hence never having one above-average album, but plenty of good songs.

True, I find Sonic Youth's first of their three immaculate albums to be 'Sister' which is something like their 5th release.

I'd say the most common is the first three albums though.

I suppose my initial thing was a bit vague
I meant that...and that they just don't produce good music anymore and should have broken up before they sullied their previous work.

Even though I love Endless Wire and have a soft spot for Face Dances, the Who really should have split up after 5:15 & Love Reign O'er Me.

As far as the Stones go, there are some good tracks on Voodoo Lounge and A Bigger Bang. Still, a case could be made that they should have split up after Mick Taylor left, or even when Brian Jones died. Are the Stones of today just a greedy outfit in it for the bucks? Sure...but were they ever any different?
