USB flash drive question?

Apologies in advance if this question seems kind of dim, but when I was young computers weren't really around and I'm only beginning to learn about them.

I have bought a laptop and was told that, to transfer information, this is now done on laptops via USB flash drives (memory sticks?) rather than floppy disks.

I would like to transfer some information from my laptop on to an ordinary PC but haven't a clue as to where the USB flash drive would be inserted. Do normal PCs have USB ports?

All I want to do is to transfer some Word documents but I'm confused as to how these things work on normal PCs and how they work exactly.

Like I said, technology has passed me by. I would be grateful for clear answers.
 
1st you might have to install software for the memory stick, if not then insert the USB end into the slot usually on back or side of laptop, its a rectangle shape hole, which usually has 2 holes, 1 ontop of the other. Then go to My Computer and a new icon should just appear in the file. open it and it should be empty, aslong as noone has put something on for you. Then simply open the microsft word document in My Documents, and have both boxes open on the same screen. click the word document icon, and hold it as you drag it and drop it into the memorystick folder. then you should have 2 versions of the file, one on the memory stk, and 1 in my documents. then simply remove the memry stk from the usb port, and tadah, you did it!

1. Determine the amount of data you need to transfer. You can find this by right-clicking on “My Computer” and clicking “Properties.” It will show you the exact RAM size. This will help you decide the appropriate size of the flash drive.

2. Note that a majority of flash drives are plug-'n-play on the latest PC operating systems. Plug the flash drive in the USB port of your CPU(There's only one kind of port that it will fit). Wait until the system detects the drive.

3. Go to My Computer. Locate the flash drive icon and click on it. Doing so will open the contents of the drive.

4. Open the location of the files/folders you wish to share using the flash drive.

5. Look for the plus sign (+) on the flash drive icon if you are transferring files without opening the drive’s folder. Release the mouse as soon as the plus sign (+) appears. This signifies that the data is now copied to your flash drive.

6. Verify that the data/file is stored by double-clicking the file name in the flash drive explorer window.

7. Ensure that you do not disconnect the drive directly from the machine after you have finished storing the files, as it may distort the data.

8. Go to the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon situated at the bottom of the Window’s tray. Click “Eject” or the “Remove the Hardware Safely” option when finished.

9. Click on “Stop.” Wait until the “It is now safe to remove the hardware” message appears.

10. Unplug the flash drive from the USB port, as the files/folders have been properly stored.

11. Use the flash drive to copy the data to any machine you want. Attach the drive to the machine, transfer data from the drive to the computer and detach the drive.
 
If you click on the link it will show you what a USB port looks like. When you insert your flash drive give the operating system time to find it and install it. It might open automatically or you might have to open my computer and find the drive letter it was assigned and double click on it to open it.
