USA vs Italy referee discussion thread

Que?

In your retarded 3 neuron brain I suppose there is some magical correlation between Canada sucking and the US. Where did this come from? Did I even mention Canada anywhere in my post? No I didn't. I'll bring myself down to your level of logic and reply with a totally unrelated point to your post:

"Bosnia is in Europe."

alright, so because we are cluttering up today's game thread in main OT, why don't we just do this here.

as far as i can tell the US fans (surprisingly) complain about both reds given to their team...

first of all, let's make one thing clear:

there are FALSE decisions and there are DEBATABLE decisions.

imho the refs decisions are debatable at best

>>Maestroni's

i'm surprised Onyewu wasn't sent off. that many bad tackles ("tactical fouling") would easily get you a red in the English Premiership and most other leagues too.
the main problem with the ref was his inconsistancy; the only clear-cut red was the Italy one, but the USA had several incidents were players could easily have been sent off via two yellows, or even straight reds.

the ref was 2 meters away on that mastro foul. he had the best view out of anyone, and im sure that from his excellent position, the foul looked horrible. the fact was he went in with two cleats to Pirlo's ankle, after Pirlo had played the ball and it was out of Mastro's reach. It was a late, poorly-timed, malicious tackle that was correct. Mastro was a dumbass bc he knew this ref was strict, and on top of this, he made the tackle late in the half.

The Brazilian coverage of the game, which has a former WC ref as one of its commentators agreed 100% with the card, as did Urs Meier, a former top-ref, who is now an analyst for a German station. And, the BBC news article on the game even said it was malicious and deserving. so it seems that several media outlets agree with the call.

This was a heated game and I dont know of a better way to control this game unless you give out reds. The players were all stupid with the rough fouls and I think it wouldve been much worse if he let the plays go. You'd think that a red card would be a warning to the players, but I guess they didnt get the message.

Italy able to tie? We scored the opening goal, and we put the goal in our own net for you

US didn't outplay italy the whole match.

Did you even watch the match?

alright, i had gotten the impression that OT thought the cards were unjustified.

on a sidenote:

i watched yesterday's game with a bunch of other people and they all agreed that the US actually made the impression of being a WC-worthy team - although this was 2006's ugliest WC match so far.

however, as today they aired Bruce Arena how the US would've had a chance if it wasn't for that bad referee and that one could see that "traditional" football nations such as italy were given an advantage by the FIFA referees, much of the respect they ganied on the field yesterday vanished.
why do they act like sour losers - everybody agreed that especially the US played very rough and italy had a minor disadvantage because of many unfair offside-calls.

yet, Team USA alleges the complete opposite - how come?

the ref did an outstanding job, every expert i respect agrees on that - this sure was no easy match to keep in check

I posted this in the main thread too.

This is an analysis of a few incidents from the United States/Italy match.

The commentary might be shoddy because I didn't edit it. I just typed as I was watching. The caps are small but you can sort of see what's going on. Tell me if i'm an idiot or not. I tried to be unbiased.

Totti clips the ball but gets more ankle on a slide tackle. Foul and a yellow card. Borderline yellow at best. He got the ball first then Dempsey's ankle. It was from the side and mistimed though.

Terribly mistimed tackle and swipe at the right leg by Bocanegra. This is more of a yellow than Totti's.

Donovan leans into the defender and falls. Obviously a good no call. I don't see it as a dive, I think he's just a weak midget to be honest.

De Rossi tackles the ball away. Slides and complains for no reason.

Foul on Onyewu, it wasn't a foul before he tried to put his arms up to say he was just using body and thereby caught him in a cross type position like he was fucking him in the ass.

In the last frames he was probably in an offside position but it's moot because Keller gathers it easily.

Offsides by a shoulder length IMO. British announcer said, "Most certainly will raise a flag here"

Kicked in the leg, no foul called. Wrong call, he clearly got him in the calf.

Zambrotta got his arm up, initiated contact and took a dive. Foul called on United States. Bad call.

US puts together a string of passes Convey has one man to beat and is tackled from behind poorly. No card. How is this not a card but Pope's is in the second half?

Eddie Pope pushes down as the last defender and gets a yellow. Pope's shirt was clearly getting pulled but after Pope had already shoved from the back. An easy yellow.

Mastroeni's gets the ball, no leg and yet the Italian goes down. The "foul" results in Italy's first goal when Pope decides running is too hard and raising his hand is better.

Two guys look offside on the goal as well.

McBride would not have gotten to this if he swung and missed.

Don't tell me this was unintentional. This was a red, no arguments.

Onyewu keeps him onside on an offside call. Bad call but speculation that it would have been a goal is wrong. The whistle blew just before the shot, Keller and others had seen the flag up and Keller didn't even have a go at the ball.

Way offsides.

The British announcer sounds freaked out that it's a red card. He thought it was a free kick. Mastroeni comes in with one foot, he gets the ball, his foot gets stepped on by the Italian then rolls over onto his ankle and then his second leg comes through and his no effect on the play. A yellow but not a red. Just no. I thought it might have been a red before but not anymore.

Toni grabs Onyewu's shirt, pulls him into himself and then catches a knee in the back of the leg and goes flying. Foul on Onyewu. Arena goes bat shit and his man boobs jiggle a little.

British announcer says he got a touch on the ball first to be fair, which he did. Onyewu was behind Pope. However, it WAS from behind the attacker and was a foul. On the flip side, the ref did give him a yellow, looked at his notes, gave a stunned look, then pulled out a red and gave to Pope's back. I'm positive he did this forgetting Pope already had a yellow. In a neutral situation, a borderline yellow with no free pass, no malicious tackle and the touch on the ball. I still don't think it's a 2nd yellow especially when you consider everything.

Offsides, British commentator says correct decision, I have to agree.

Onside. Might have resulted in a shot but the ref blew his whistle.

Offside but not called.

Hits his leg and is practically carried up by his hands. A hand ball obviously and in the box but i'm not sure if that's really a penalty. It was clearly unintentional.

Close. His right shoulder could be ahead but I call him level. Bad offsides call that resulted in pretty much nothing anyway.

McBride undercut by Italian defender. No foul given.

A little offsides.

Clearly not a goal when you think about it. McBride obviously was not passive, it did not hit him but he screen the keeper.

No reason for this cap. Just hilarious.

Italian guy pushes Cherundolo. A foul but he is given a yellow. Terrible ass yellow.

Looks offside by a half body length.

Italian player falls down. Why? I have no idea.

Dive again.

A foul from behind. I'm surprised it wasn't a red. Either way, no foul given. Missed call.

Italian defender gets all ball. Donovan takes a dive. Good no call.

Looks even. Flag stayed down anyway.

Offsides.

Tugged his shirt a lot but a penalty won't be given on that ticky tack shit.

I don't come back to this forum often though. So forgive me if I forget about it again.

kensai i appreciate your effort but since this is obviously neither complete nor unbiased - it can't be, even various experts have trouble doing this although they put days of work into post-game analyse i don't know exactly what you are trying to tell us.

i remember more italy-onsides they got called on then the ones you posted.
however i will admit that i will definitely not re-watch the whole game as itw as an ugly ass match watching it the first time

i'd prefer to stick to a few situations crucial for the outcome of this match.

Despite having embaressed myself yesterday by failing to recognise that I didnt understand the active/passive offside fingy etc I'm going to move on, feel free not to yourselves I surely deserve it.

The UK press have generally slamed the players on both teams but supported the ref. Here is just one example
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,28749-2231336,00.html
There are others

Those I watched the game with just found it all very funny

Perhaps, on reflection, it is more of a shame than amusing but either way its not the refs fault

I really enjoyed it & despite the brutality of both sides the US team showed loads of heart & guts &, dare i even say it, skill

I felt the US team lacked passion in the first game, perhaps this is why the game was so dirty as they sought to refute such criticisms, .., the Italians, IMO, sought to imtimidate the US early on, ..., so we ended up with the battle of kaiserslauten (sp?)

We're all laughing at the continued 'we was robbed' style ref blaming by both sides, not least coz we have some sympathy coz we've been their, ..., but also because we recognise thats it is ultimately futile, (even though we do it ourselves).

Great game, IMO.

I'm fairly drunk & very tired & looking forward to aus v brazil.

We've had to agree to ban the use of the word 'cleats', but I very much doubt it will hold

he did give out many many warnings, in fact i would've given less to Onyewu.

These cards were not bizarre at all, read the international press and you'll see that all (ibsomeexpertinnewjerseydoesnt) the experts agree that this was an excellent referee.

/edit: referriung to the intern. press comment: i just realized you are from the UK - i had the impression the vast majority of UK press agreed to this statement, although you guys usually are way out there when its comes to referees
UK commenting on referees in international matches is almost always good for a laugh

"poor tackle" just doesn't cut it in this case imho

it was really bad and if tackles like that aren't severly punished, we won't see players like kaka or other "artists" play - i'm okay with a hard game but i also support the effort to ensure quality football.
tackles like that are not to be tolerated and if a player takes the chances to potentially hurt someone then ffs punish him for willingly jumping at someone while not thinking about the consequences.

dirty tackles =

are you people serious? The US outplayed italy hands down.

Italy's goal came off a freekick caused by....SHOCKER...a bullshit foul call.

Personally, it looked to me like italy fielded a bunch of little bitches, how they kept falling when hardly getting touched. The same tackles and the US players kept on running through...

Cliffs: Italy soccer players are better fit for acting than playing soccer.
