US should do this:

a) Stop even trying at the time being and go home
b) Stop wasting talent on football and other non international crap sports
c) Gather a killer soccer-team that would own and get a decent league
d) Come back again later!

How fucking lightweight is that? The Italy game was a triumph for the notion of 'trying' & you've gained much respect for it. A large part of the beauty lies in the passion & committment

1) Why?
2) You mean 'gridiron' not 'football' dont you?

The first part isnt possible without 'trying' the second part sounds a good idea (2 divisions with relegation, less 'breadheadary' etc), ..., but your best players are almost certainly going to fuck off to Europe for 'advanced training' anyway, ..., quite how you support a bigger 2 division league in such circumstances is unclear.

Do this anyway, theres no need to 'withdraw' in the first place, ..., you can hold your head up high already.
You cant not compete only on the assumption that nothing but continual total victory is possible, ..., or indeed desirible.
To believe otherwise is to totally miss the point, ..., do teams in the NBA, NFL etc only compete when they feel certain of total victory?

Maybe I've misinterpreted you point, I'm sure you'll let me know.

The US was drawn an incredibly tough group - you only have to look at the fact that the Czech Republic went out with them to see that. There is no dishonour in losing to the Czechs, however in that first game the team really did lack heart and desire to win the game. They also looked physically not as strong. The Italy game was a great showcase, the team played incredibly well. Ghana are a great team, and destroyed the Czech republic (should have been a lot more than 2 goals!) - the penalty decision went against the USA, but in the end that really wasn't a deciding factor.

The team just wasn't good enough to go through that particular group - every team in the world would not have liked being drawn in that group. I wouldn't say it's the end of the road for the USA team, but it is plain to see that technically they are not in the top 10 world teams, despite what their FIFA ranking says. I would have liked to have seen younger talents such as Freddy Adu given a chance, or at least included inthe squad for the experience of being "at" the world cup.

Sometimes you've just got to call it a day and a new coach with fresh ideas and a new approach should probably be the order of the day.

^^^Freddy Adu should not of been on this squad. He still needs lots of development and has a very poor, selfish attitude right now. Being a star so young is going to his head and him being left off the team was the right thing to do.

To answer your questions:

A) Why? You cannot continue to improve if you dont compete at the top level. We had a terrific 2002 Cup and just didnt get the job done. Even world powers have terrible cups at times.

B) No one that plays American football would be a good soccer player, they take two totally different type of athletes. Also, just because a sport isnt played internationally doesnt make it crap.

C) We have a good team despite how they played in the cup. They showed in the Italy what they are capable off. We have a good league that is getting better with time. A strong sports league doesnt happen overnight. You have no idea how hard it is to get soccer/football popular in this country. I want nothing more than for soccer to get more respect in the US. It sucks hearing it get bashed my ignorant people everyday. But it is gaining ground everyday and I believe that we will become a world power in this sport.
