US investigators have shut down a newly-completed, elaborate drug tunnel running under the border between Tijuana and San Diego, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement told CNN. The tunnel had not even been used yet according to ICE spokespersons. No further comments have been made pending investigation.
The tunnel was busted in a cooperative effort between the ICE, the DEA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
The tunnel was equipped with a rail and lighting system. Exactly three years ago a similar tunnel running along the border was discovered. It connected warehouses in Mexico and the US. Around 30 tons of cannabis were found and seized in this operation as well. The tunnel found in 2010 was 600 yards.
This operation is a shimmer of light in the tunnel, no pun intended, seeing as drug cartels in the region have become so strong and elaborate that many areas on the Mexican side of the border are falling victim to unhampered violent crime, sources report.
