US Cellular bill placed in collections. Advice?

A previous cellphone bill was placed in collections, I've never had anything in collections before so I was curious as to what steps I can take to protect myself yet still get the debt paid. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Oh, I live in North Carolina and the debt was turned over in December 09.
I have all intentions to pay it, and have from the moment I broke the contract, I was just hoping I could make it to tax time without it going to collections. My main concern is giving my checking account info out. The agency is really rude and are trying their best to get my bank info. I would assume some sort of written payment plan should be in order, then I will be more than willing to pay.

My advice is just PAY it!

It can affect you getting loans or anything in the future if you leave it unpaid, no matter if you dispute it, etc. - doesn't matter if it's a small amount either, it is a huge red flag to lenders.

It is a real pain trying to pay it last minute and get it resolved so just pay it now. Find out who the collection agency is and call them and pay it.
