Upstairs or Downstairs? And how to build it?

Ok well i just moved out im 17 and i got a house with cheap rent $100/month) out in the country with a big yard, but the problem is the house is only 8 feet high and the attic takes up 2 feet of it (making the ceiling very short) and the whole house is only 9 feet by 15.5 feet, ive built a wall to seperate the bedroom from the only other room the living room but its extremely tiny, i can barely fit a couch in the 5 x 8 living room. Ive got power even though its an extension cord running from the main system with 1 power bar to feed the whole house, which im getting redone soon..

Basically my question is should i put in an upstairs (add another 6 feet onto the place) or should i build in a basement (add 6 feet below the place in other words).

All i want to do is put in a bathroom (once we get plumbing) and another bedroom, so that the main floor can be a full kitchen/living room, i have to redo the roof anyway so upstairs might not be a bad idea (the roof has holes in it a foot wide by a foot long) the house is 110 years old.

Also what is harder to put in, i have limited money (very limited) and limited experience im more of a do-it-yourselfer. But i can't see digging a basement to be too difficult with a good shovel, an upstairs sounds harder to me. Thanks, Dustin.
