thunk. Thoughts? Just purchased the car for my teenage daughter. she has been driving it and didn't mention this problem to me. Found out when I took it out on the highway. How big of a problem is this - or is the car just older and supposed to do this? 125,000 miles - GT model.

Sounds like the transmission, especially if the engine whines a little before the thunk. Check your transmission fluid, if it is low add some of course, if it isn't see if smells burnt (hard to explain, you can try to compare it to a newer car). I would have a mechanic check it either way. A transmission problem can be expensive, it all depends on the problem.

Good luck.
