upgrading to HDTV

So I purchased a new HDTV a week ago and thinking about getting HD programming. I called expressvu to see how to go about the upgrade. They gave me several options

1. Rent for $10 a month, get free HDTV pack for 6 months/ tech comes over and installs it. Pay $100 upfront and will get back on bill.

2. Purchase the reciever for $299 (fs and bb sells them for $249) and get free install but no 6 month HDTV pack promo.

My question is does any of the two options require a commitment? I have called back and got different answers and knowing how many problems BEV has given me over the past year I do not think I want to be in a commitment with them at all.

any help is appriciated.

Yes, you are tied into a 2 Year term.

How many receivers do you have now.?

Free Upgrade would be of ALL the receivers you have now, plus the HD box installed for free.
 
I would go for nothing less than a 9200/9242. You should be able to get 1 year free rental and 6 months free HD. If they won't give you that, just say you want to disconnect and wait for a retention offer, often 3 months free service plus the above. IMHO, EV is a bad bet for HD in the next two years. They have a bandwidth crunch that will not be remedied until 2009. If available, Rogers cable is a better bet and they offer more 'real' HD channels plus a 'Ditch The Dish' receiver trade in for satellite customers.
 
Or if you live in the GTA, over-the-air is a viable option for free (real)hi-def network viewing from Toronto and Buffalo. Also be prepared for the poor quality of the Expressvu HD. I was watching a NFL broadcast in a retail outlet, satellite source. You could literally count the macroblocks. I estimated the resolution at times was 400 X 150 for much of the picture content, as opposed to the 1920X1080. It was closer to VHS quality. They have a real catch-22. Customers presumably want more channels, so the quality of the image takes a hit.
 
I have one 3100 reciever with already the dish upgrade as I had to get it when I subbed to an international channel but cancelled it. Really I want a tech to come in because I have been getting signal loss and the wiring is not that great.

Then my understanding is, provided you have no programming off Nimiq 2 now, which you do not, then you are entitled to a FREE Installation.
 
If you are an existing client they will ask you to commit 1 year if you take a rental unit...if you buy you are keeping the existing commitment or stay on a month to month base.

 
Rental is 1 year contract with 6 month free HD pack.
Purchase is no additional contract.

2 year contract is only for new customers, existing customers getting new rentals are always 1 year contract on that particular receiver. Additional purchased receivers are never on their own contract. Any existing contract continues as is.

Installation is free given you have never had HD and add HD programming in either case at the time of install.

In that you never said you were an existing Customer, I could only comment on the information you supplied at that time.

This statement is incorrect;



The CSR you spoke to is mistaken, Installation of an HD Upgrade is free if the Customer has NO SERVICES from Nimiq 2 currently. It is NOT free just because you have not had HD before.

You still might qualify as you tell us you had canceled some international programming a while ago. Still depending on how diligent the CSR is at the time of your information arriving in the billing department you MAY get invoiced, I just do not know.
 
Nimiq 1 is correct...it isn't an HD offer to get the free installation, it is part of their Nimiq2 Upgrade Offer (which has been going on for almost 18 months now)...it requires you to subscribe to ANY programming which requires Nimiq2 reception (most often, it ends up being HD, but that isn't the reqirement)...if you already subscribe to any N2 programming (or perhaps within a certain time frame) you may be ineligible to receive the free install.
 
You may want to read some of the threads here about Expressvu HD Lite before spending money. If you want the best HD PQ, Bell is your last choice.
 
I know I'm kinda leaping into this discussion but I have a similar question based on my setup.
I have been thinking about going to HD when\if my old TV and\or BEV5100 unit die on me.

Current setup:
1 5100 receiver to a 18"(?) dish on TV tower.
Receiver connected to old 32" TV AND coax cable run upstairs to newish 27" so same channel on both TV's. UHF remote works everywhere anyway.
Programming is old English Locals, Networks, Learning, Fun Zone
2nd Network Feed - East or West

Future Plans:
If\when a TV dies I want to go to a HD Widescreen TV upstairs while keeping the 5100 on a TV downstairs.

Would I need to upgrade\replace my old dish and get all new wiring?
Would each receiver have it's own dish, own wiring to it's own TV? To me that kinda makes sense to separate everything from old SD programming to older TV while getting new TV, receiver, dish wiring...

Any of this make sense to anyone? :-)

You can feed dozens of receivers from one Dish, although Express Vu currently limit customers to 6 receivers per account.

A 9200 or 9242 would mean that you could get rid of the 5100 as well..... It would give HD on one TV and SD on the other.

18" dish would have to be changed for a 20" with 2 LNBF's. Cables SHOULD be replaced if you qualify for a free installation, if you do it yourself, then it's your call.

-But my old dish won't support the new HD channels I thought?

-Or just leave the old 5100 running for the kids downstairs... even though I will have the option of jacking in the second feed from the 9242.

-Well if I need to upgrade the dish and SHOULD replace cables then shouldn't I just add a new dish to the new receiver and sever the ties from old receiver downstairs to upstairs. (They are just one floor apart so I can just disconnect the cables.)
Even then I can leave the old coax cable from upstairs to downstairs if the old 5100 ever dies.
