Upgrade...why not???

Hi all
Could someone please enlighten me why my operating system is no longer updated?
Currently my G1 is running firmware version 1.6 and Kernel Version 2.6.29-00479-g3c7df37
I live in Brazil
Thank you...

ok, i initially thought that all device would be running the latest version of android, and this was a huge perk.
However it seems as though google are now starting to use more powerful graphics chips when writing the latest releases of android.
So, you guessed it, they cannot push this update to the G1 because it does not have the graphics processing power, all other phones able to run it should get the update.

hope this helps

It's not about the graphics processing power, it's about the size of the ROM. They used every trick in the book, and invented a whole load of new tricks, to fit 1.6 onto the handsets (like the G1) with the 128MB ROM chips. There's something like 200K free. Android 2.0 is some 20MB bigger than 1.6 on the releases I've seen. In theory, you can drop that down to 9MB bigger if you omit a load of stuff, but it's still not going to fit.

Well... let's talk raw pixel pushing power...

The G1 (1.6) has a resolution of 320 x 480 = 153,600 pixels.

The Droid (2.0) has a resolution of 854 x 480 = 409,920 pixels.

Therefore, the Droid has around 2.7x the pixels as the G1, and hence (generalising here) it needs 2.7x the graphics processing power to deliver the same frame rate.

Both the Droid and the Nexus 1 have graphics chips that are, on paper, around 2x faster than the G1. But, the Nexus 1 has a more powerful processor, so appears slightly faster. Anyway, my point is they're on a pretty level playing field in terms of frames per second. This can be shown by running Neocore to benchmark the graphics on the G1 and Nexus 1. Someone has already done that here: http://android.modaco.com/content/t-mobile-pulse-pulse-modaco-com/298879/neocore-pulse-vs-g1-vs-nexus-one/

G1 = 24.5fps
N1 = 26.7fps

So, in terms of fps (which is what matters), the N1 is almost identical to the G1. I doubt graphics are a factor in delivering Android 2.X to the G1.

Also, you will notice the some handsets, like the HTC Hero, have been confirmed as getting Android 2.X, even though they have identical graphics chips to the G1. The HTC Hero, however, does have a 256MB ROM chip, as opposed to the G1's 128MB.

In fact, the only phones that have already got, or have been confirmed as getting, Android 2.X all have at least 256MB ROM chips. All the ones that haven't been confirmed as getting it have 128MB ROM chips.

I see, so he was telling lies then in the interview with engadget. or he did not know better.thanks for clearing this up though. i am sad im stuck on 1.6 forever now, but still its better than the new release phones that are still on 1.5. that must suck.
Are you likely to get a nexus one, I think we are in similar situations, G1 t-mobile uk. Its cheap for us because of exchange rate, sooo tempting

I'm not getting a Nexus One as I don't feel that I can live without a hardware keyboard. I like the Nexus Two though (Motorola Shadow) as it's similar, has a real keyboard, and an even bigger screen, as shown here: http://rabroad.com/google-nexus-two-with-qwerty-is-the-motorola-shadow-20100118/

I'm on T-Mobile UK on an 18 month contract, so gonna wait and see what's available in August when I'm due to renew. With T-Mobile UK you can get a ?5 per month discount on your contact if you choose not to get a new phone from them after 18 months. That's like knocking ?90 off the price of a phone, which makes a lot of SIM Free phones affordable, especially when you consider you can get ?100 back for a G1 if you use one of those recycling websites. That means the cost of an N1 for me would be about ?130.

I take it by the interview with Engadget you mean the video on this page? http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/19/the-engadget-show-005-googles-erick-tseng-ces-wrap-up-widi/

I've not had time to see it yet - it's over an hour long.

Thank you. I have a little jealous of you, just to know these are the asking price of some Android phones in Brazil on "Mercado Livre" (Brazilian eBay):

HTC G1: US$ 760.00 - unlocked
Nexus One: US$ 1150.00 - unlocked

There were some hacked versions of Google maps floating around (maybe try the XDA forums) that had turn by turn outside the US active. If I recall correctly though, Google did something that prevented these working.
