Upgrade to T3 from SOny Clie

I want to upgrade to a T3 from a Sony Clie TJ25. I'm purshasing the T3 from an elder gentleman (Gift from daughter) so all I have is the T3 and the battery recharger. I downloaded the T3 software from the PalmOne website and purchased a USB connector. When I opened the Palm Desktop software my Sony Desktop disappeared and so did a lot of my datebook information. I did a System Restore and retreived my information so I'm okay there.

My problem is when I tried to Sync the T3 with the new Palm deskstop it wouldn't Sync. I also had a lot of trouble reloading the HotSync Manager (It was suggested to close HS manager then re-open. The HotSync software also didn't load automatically when I restarted either). I couldn't establish a connection. I don't think it was the USB connector I was using (Belkin) because when I plugged it in to my PC the T3 began to recharge...So I went to the PalmOne support page and tried their suggestions but can't seem to find the solution. After the System Restore I have my Sony Desktop again but I'm worried about completely removing to install the Palm DT.

What I''m wondering is do I need to remove the Sony Desktop before I install the Palm Desktop? And will I lose my data? And how do I save all the software applications I have on my Clie. Also, are the Palm T3 drivers come with the software? I'm not sure if the T3 wouldn't sync because of the Sony/Palm conflict or because I don't have drivers for the T3.

I hope my questions make sense. Any help would be appreciated.

RubyRed2005,
You may want to search the 1src forum because they've beat this issue to death.

The easiest way to transfer information from Clie to Tungsten or vice versa, is to use a Mac and The Missing Sync software. It works flawlessly.

Good luck!

You really need a copy of the T3 install disk. This contains not only the T3 drivers and conduits but the newer version of the Palm desktop, all of which you need. If this gentleman can't find the CD, call Palm customer service and order one. It's only about $10 and will save you a world of grief. The Clie drivers are not compatible with the T3 and you're never going to get the T3 working right without the original CD.

Once you get a copy of the CD, the process is fairly simple since you're going from one OS 5 machine to another Just do the following steps:

1. Make sure all your data is updated on the Clie desktop with one last sync.

2. Go to c:\Program Files\Sony Handheld\YourUserName\backup. Copy this folder to a temporary location just in case.

3. Go to Control Panel. Add or Remove programs. find and uninstall the cureent Palm desktop software.

4. Insert the T3 CD and then install the new Palm Desktop.

5. Check that the conduits have been properly installed in the hotsync manager. If you want to be extra safe, set the Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, and Memo conduits for a one time action of "Handheld overwrites desktop".

6. Hotsync the T3. You should now see your data in the Palm desktop and all your prgrams backed up into the new Palm\backup folder.

Thank you for the suggestions. I went to the 1scr forums. It's a lttle hard to browse there because the all the ads...

I went to PalmOne again and they do have the drivers for T3, so I downloaded everything again (I'm impatient). I removed the Clie desktop so there didn't seem to be any conflict. I will get the disk anyhow.

I was able to Hotsync. Part of the problem is my USB connector - I had to hold the connector to the T3 because it just wasn't connecting right. My Clie information didn't transfer over however, and I'm not sure how to move everything over. Any suggestions, or point to a thread where they dealt with this issue? I can't seem to find one.

Thanks again.

What information exactly didn't transfer over? There are some Clie programs like Backup and Data Import that are in the Clie ROM and won't transfer to a T3. Some detailed inormation on what did and didn't transfer would help.

Well, none of my old data transferred over. Nothing from my datebook, Addresses, etc., or software programs.

When I tried to Hotsync for the first time it asked for my User Name on the Users window. I tried to use my old User Name (the one I use with Clie) but it said that name was used or something like that, and that old user name wouldn't come up in the Users window so I couldn't select it. So I had to create a new User name. Which now I realize will make transferring my software programs to the T3 a pain because the registration numbers won't work, and is probably why the old Clie info didn't transfer over.

I'm wondering if I should do a hard reset on the T3...then try again to get my old User name or try to transfer files manually if possible. The old files are still there. I don't know why I couldn't get the old User name to come up in the window.

Yes, you should hard reset the T3 and start again. There's no reason I know of that you shouldn't be able to use your original user name. When the dialog box comes up when you first hotsync, you should be able to just click on the original user name and proceed from there. If you get an error message, please post the exact text of the error message here.

I didn't get an error message but my original User name just didn't show up. So I removed the Palm Desktop, back-upped files, loaded the Sony desktop (again!), and then loaded the Palm Desktop without removing the Clie desktop. Then I did a hard reset on the T3. So when I did a hotsync my old user name came up and I selected it, and all my info from the Clie downloaded onto the T3 with no trouble. Although, some of the Sony programs downloaded also, but I was able to easily remove them, and nothing crashed my T3.

I figure there must be a better way but so long as everything is working well....it's okay. If Sony is going to stop production of Clie's in the US I figure more Clie user's will have to figure this one out. Good luck!

PS: I love the T3!

Thanks for the assistance. :)

I'm glad you got things worked out. There are other methods to transfer data from the Clie to a Palm but, as long as the hotsync drivers don't conflict with one another, the way you did it is fine. The problem is that it normally won't work because of the differences between Sony's USB drivers and Palm's USB drivers. This is more of a problem with OS 4 Clies than OS 5 Clies but reamins a problem nonetheless. If you had the the T3 CD, all of this would have been much easier right from the start.

Hello Folks .........

I just want to confirm / re-affirm ......

Is the T3 about the best I can do (as far as high performance PDA) and KEEP the same cradle, charger, etc....... that my Palm m515 currently uses?

Cheers,

Syno

Yes, the T3 is the last Palm with the universal connector. There's no need to use your M515 cradle and charger since the T3 comes with a cradle and charger. Any other peripherals you have that use the universal connector should still work with the T3 although you may need to upgrade some drivers for OS 5 compatibility.
