Upgrade To 4.5 OS

Here's a link to a thread that discusses ways to free up memory:

http://blackberryforums.rabroad.com/showthread.php?t=22541

I also deleted the Help and TTY applications off my device, which freed up about 5mb of space.

I may have this too. I don't get any messages but my memory goes from almost 12mb to 9mb with "normal" to little operation, mostly email retrieval, etc. If I do nothing but reboot it goes back to around 12mb without clearing cache, deleting log, deleting any applications, etc. I know that you can free up memory and it's not critical to me yet but I DO wonder where it goes. It didn't happen on previous releases.

Also know about this and it helps get some back but it doesn't solve the memory just disappearing on its own.

...and same as comment above - it'll free up memory but I hope we can get a solution to memory just seeming to "fade away" with normal BB use.

Right now I guess it's just one of those great mysteries of the BlackBerry that we have to deal with until RIM comes up with a solution. I don't know that it will ever go away, though. Memory on SmartPhones, PCs, etc tends to get fragmented over time and with heavy usage. Just as you are advised to clear out unused applications, files, etc on your PC and reboot the sucker every now and then, it's the same with the BlackBerry. The good ol' battery pull after performing some housecleaning brings the free file back up.

One thing I noticed after the deletion of the Help and TTY apps is that my memory held pretty steady between 25 and 27mb.

Not to sound like a geek (I am) I back up every night and when I do I clear everything on the device. Will follow the link and erase help and TTY and see if that helps. The memory is all over the place. I have had the Curve 5 months and this is my first upgrade.Should it act like this so soon? It didn't do this before the upgrade. Thanks for your help!!!

Myke,

"The memory is all over the place" comment - is that just today or have you noticed it for the 5 days you've had 4.5? Also, there's no harm in backing up every day - it seems a little extreme but if you have a lot of activity you can't be too careful. (Did I just contradict myself? )

Regarding your "...Should it act like this so soon? It didn't do this before the upgrade." I think you may have answered your own question. It SHOULDN'T act like this but frankly, the release still has a few bugs, maybe more than "normal." It has a LOT of new features (HTML email, video camera, video streaming, etc.) that weren't available previously to many of us.

You probably know that the beta has been "obtainable" for a long while - the official releases, and they are not complete for all devices yet, have only been out a short while and we all want to keep them if we can stand the bugs. I hope that info helps - good luck and keep backing up. I don't do it often enough.

LOL! Your guess is as good as mine, John. We really need to get a RIM engineer on here to explain this phenomenon to us in terms we can all understand!

I also want to add that this problem seems sporadic in nature in that some people have it worse than others and some of us don't seem to have it at all.

If there was some common theme we might be able to narrow it down somewhat.

I tried to download the orange 4.5 os. This is my 3rd try. I wiped my phone, upgraded to 4.5 backed up my media card, then reformatted it. Everything was going great until I tried to put my pics back on the media card. (using media mgr) As soon as I did it, my phone went into reset mode! It's obviosly my media card, but I can't put it all together. So, back I went to 4.2. :-(

Hey JBlackfish- Thanks for your help! I also am in absolute heaven and won't downgrade unless it becomes absolutely necessary. These are great features, I just cant wait till the final version.

Hang in there Myke. So far my problems are

1) the manual request of email images requirement, (annoying but not serious)
2) inability to use BB as tethered modem, (rarely use)
3) hung up trying mymovy.com applications, (going to delete it)
4) the memory cleaning occasionally resets from enabled back to disabled and
5) a little memory leak but not severe

All not big issues for me so I'm still going.

Only problem I've run into so far is that some icons look ugly. And the myfaves icons look very "buttony", which makes the picture ones butt-ugly. But it's whatever.

Bluesdrive

That's how the icons are going to look with the new update of myfaves. They try to give them like a 3d sleek look to them. Until the come out with myfaves2. Whatever or 3.0~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~
