Upgrade Razr for wife.

My wife's older Razr is biting the dust working only some of the time and not showing voicemails till days later.

So we are in the market to get her another phone.

She's express interest in a more PDA type phone where should could possible check emails and mainly for a caledar she can sync with outlook.

But above all she not much into tech so she'll want a good functioning phone system.

Unlike my 8125 which takes Voice Commander which sometimes work to call with ease.

One factor is how the phone sync. Where she works may not let her install software on the machine to sync with her work calendar so if would be great if it would just sync? Not sure if something exists.

Any suggestions...A good phone that wasn't always freezing would be good as well. I know my 8125 has to be rebooted every so often. She would be annoyed by this.

She likes the Treo 680 Crimson
and I think she might like the Blackjack (not sure)

She also liked the Samsung A717 but that doesn't seem to have a calendar features.

I would say she's more looking at a smartphone vs a full fledged PDA.

Another thing is I have the Data plan with my PDA through ATT and it would be great if she could share it if they even do that.

she doesn't need a PDA to do that. most phone have that functionality. i think that a PDA will be overkill for her given what you've said.

i never recommend windows devices. too buggy and unreliable.

do you have a budget?

So are you thinking a smartphone might be better?

Note really a budget although we'd like to not spend over $200 if possible but can go a little over.

What about the 3125 from ATT or the BB Pearl?

no, i'm thinking a smartphone is overkill.

$200 . that's ?100. budget seems a bit tight. you won't get a PDA for that anyway, unless you want to buy second hand.

3125 is probably ok.

We went to the ATT store today and she looked at all the phones mentioned and decided she wanted a PDA phone of sorts but didn't want a wide phone.

She really likes the Crimson Blackberry Pearl.

Anything I should know about this phone?

She doesn't want a really wide phone. She has tiny hands.

I've never had a Blackberry. I don't think we're going to mess with a data plan since she'll rarely ever check email or browse the internet.

A BB isn't like a IPhone is it? You are not required to have a data plan are you?

I'll probably have one pay per use for an emergency.

Mostly she's just wanted a good calendar and any other apps it might have.

Fleabay has them for around 280.00 new with no contract so I'm thinking about getting it from there. Any other suggestions for where to get it?

I don't do contracts anymore.

Ok, a PDA phone is probably overkill, but the Cingular 3125 (and whatever it's successor eventually is) would work. A Blackjack might work too, but my recommendation is to get a heavy feature-phone instead. The Moto RAZR V3xx (or any other Motorola) will sync contacts and calendar through Motorola Phone Tools, which is available for US$10. Any Nokia (N75, 6126, etc) will sync contacts and calendar after installing Nokia PC Suite (free download). I think Samsung has a similar utility that'll work with their GSM phones.

yeah, PDA's tend to be somewhat on the large side. compared to a 'normal' phone, they look huge to my eyes.

yup. PC Studio. it comes with the phone or can be downloaded for free from the website.

Oh, and I think most SonyEricsson phones will sync contacts and calendar using SonyEricsson's PC software, which I think they also call PC Suite, but I'm not sure.

So basically any phone with a calendar would work, so long as it's one of those top 4 brands. Don't get LG...they have a phone sync package, but they charge $40 for it for their American phones.

We've had bad luck with the Razr's so that is out for sure. I tried to get her to look at the 3125 but she didn't like how flat the keys were.

It may end up being the pearl with no data plan.

i dont know how much data will cost w/o data plan but im sure it adds up even if checking email is small...if your contract with AT&T is up i suggest moving to tmobile(assuming their coverage in your area is decent) they have unlimited data for $5 which i believe is the same for 1MB on AT&T. They also have the BB Pearl.

Get the Pearl. She'll love it. Fantastic screen, battery life and it's easy to use and data plan prices will drop. 1MB of data on a pearl is tons. I receive about 25-50 emails a day and never go over. BB plans are different in that they don't charge you for e-mail attachments unless you open them.

You can also use the phone without a data plan. The contacts will sync with outlook using BB desktop manager. Good luck!
