Upgrade: Not deleting Backup...

Hello,

I just upgraded from Palm 3xe to TX; followed the directions that came with the device (i.e., install software, hotsync, done). I did not delete the Backup directory before, so the two "no-no" files (psysLaunchDB.PDB, Saved_Preferences.PRC) from the 3xe were written to the TX.

Everything seems to work in the TX - the only thing that "happened" was that the left-most button ("home") did not work anymore, but that was easily fixed by setting it again.

Am I OK now? Are there other settings that got broken in a bad way? If so, can I fix them as easily by adjusting them in normal ways? Or should I do a hard reset and start over?

Thanks in advance,
ekr

You say you installed the new Palm Desktop software that came with the TX over the IIIe- the software would have filtered the saved preferences and psyslaunch anyway because during the normal upgrade process these are automatically pulled from the backup and not restored. This process would also have advised you of any software that was in conflict with the TX and would not have installed it and would have created a subfolder called "old backup" or some similar named folder and moved all possible errant programs to that folder. These would not have been installed during the upgrade.

The home button was probably remapped by some other program installed on your device since the IIIe does not have a silk screened "home" button.

I always prefer to rename the backup folder to oldbackup and then install the new desktop software and hotsync the PIM data so that it's clean. Then start adding in clean versions of my add on software and add the corresponding database. This forces me to reset those preferences and can take a hour or so but then I know there is no possible conflict that will rear it's ugly head - when I don't want it to.

However, that's me - you obviously didn't do that so we can say we are different in our approach.

But a wise man once said: "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Leave your TX the way it is - if something rear's its ugly head - you can always fall back and punt later.

Aye... I am aware (now) that the other approach is possibly safer. Guess I was lucky as I had no hacks or other critical apps installed.

After playing around a few hours with the TX, nothing untoward happened, and I'm up to speed. Nice device.
