updating iphone with itunes help

hi all pls a customer gave me an iphone 8gb a1203 which is locked he said he updated it with itunes what version will the iphone be ?can it be unlocked ? if it can how can i do it?which software can i use in checking the the version that is installed inside ?thanks in advance
 
Connect to iTunes and check which fw, then u can update to 4.0 and jb and unlock with ultrasn0w
