I just bought a 2010 Honda Insight. I replaced the factory wheels with new 17" rim and tires with new TPMs (tire pressure monitors) from tirerack.com. I understand the new TPMs must be registered with the ECU (engine control unit). I have the documentation so I know the new TPM identification numbers, I won't need a TPM scan tool.
My question is, can I upload the new TPM id numbers into the Honda's ECU with a handheld OBD II or does it have to be taken to the dealer for them to update the ECU with the HDS (Honda Diagnostic System) (closest dealer 1hr away).
Bonus Question: If the TPMS/ECU can be updated with an OBD II, what is the most affordable unit you would recommend that would do the job? Will it read the current ID numbers for the old wheels, (so i can reinstall them for winter)?
