updates?

hey um i know nothing about android, so excuse.

im going to buy a phone with android 2.1 on it, can i download updates for it like you do on the iphone? or am i forever stuck with that version?

Depending on what phone it is your carrrier will provide the updates. Some you install yourself but most are OTA, over the air.

If you want to keep your phone "stock" (not rooted) then you have to wait for an official version to become available. You'll either get it over the air or -- as often happens on this forum -- someone will supply a direct link. But as ggrant said, it depends on the phone. Some rooted phones can have a higher version applied.
