Hello everyone!

I'm thinking about buyng a motorola quench / click xt with Android 1.5. Altought, it's a fear of getting stuck in a old OS. Is it possible to updated the OS of my phone to a newer version in a official way? If not, there's something I can do unofficially?

Sorry if my question is too newb, I'm just beggining with this.

Thanks!

Hi Gabons and welcome to the AC Forum.

The problem with older phones running Android 1.5 is that many of them simply aren't capable of upgrading to 2.0/2.1/2.2 due to memory and processor limitations. The rest of them, the carriers have chosen not to upgrade them for some reason, so I'd personally avoid such phones/carriers.

Some phones can be rooted (hacked) so that you can install custom ROMs on them. Some custom ROMs can contain some of the features of later versions of Android. Some custom ROMs are later versions of Android. However, not all phones have been rooted, and not all phones have custom ROMs available for them. Someone else may be better place to tell you if the phones you've mentioned can be rooted and what, if any, ROMs are available for them.

Personally, if you can, you want to go for one of the Android 2.X devices, such as the Motorola Droid (called the Milestone outside of the US), the Nexus One, HTC Desire, HTC Incredible, etc.

The last that I heard, the quench click xt is not root-able. Will it be in the future? Perhaps but not guaranteed. It also does not have a lot of internal storage which may prevent it from being upgradeable to Android 2.0+. I would advise to choose a different device if you want to run Android 2.1. extorian listed some nice options for this right above.

I have a Hero with 1.5 , can or should it be upgraded to 2.1? When I bought it about a month ago they said there would be a software update coming for it soon.

Hero is possible as it has just enough memory. Only time will tell though. If it doesn't have it by the end of July I doubt it'll get it.
