And if a candidate is on the ballot in enough states to win a majority of electoral college votes, just by grass-roots efforts and without corporate sponsorship and high-dollar TV ads, shouldn't they be allowed to participate in the presidential debates? I realize we can't include every kook in a gorilla suit looking for 15 minutes of fame, but if someone is on enough state ballots to win it, why not let them be heard?
The League of Women Voters withdrew sponsorship of the presidential debates, and I quote: "because the demands of the two campaign organizations would perpetrate a fraud on the American voter. It has become clear to us that the candidates' organizations aim to add debates to their list of campaign-trail charades devoid of substance, spontaneity and answers to tough questions. The League has no intention of becoming an accessory to the hoodwinking of the American public."
