Unsure of operating system for a computer i am building?

I currently have a copy of Windows XP, along with the install disks and all that. I am going to be building a computer and need to know whether I will be able to use this copy of windows on it or if i need to buy another. i have read on some sites that you need to uninstall windows to deactivate your key so that you are able to activate it again on another computer. If this is true, how do you do this and how do you make sure that microsoft recognizes your key as being deactivated?
