Unlocking processor cores - illegal?

Hey, I have a Phenom II X2 545, so as you can tell it's a dual core. I recently found out that all Phenom II models are native quads, and I'm thinking about unlocking the cores. ANYWAY. My friend keeps telling me it's illegal because the company only sells you access to 2 of their cores. It makes sense, but when I try googling it, NOTHING about the topic comes up, neither it being illegal, or legal. I just wanted to check. Thanks guys!
Ok, to the first person. You didn't totally answer my question lol. I heard they were giving away codes for that, but the software for unlocking cores is RIGHT in my motherboard. And to be honest, I've already unlocked them, so I have a 3.0 quad running, with stability. I've been running this quad for about a week now. I just wanted to be safe, not getting in trouble with Yahoo Answers and w/e posting that I did something illegal, but now I don't really care.

Second guy. Look up native quad. X2 means dual core, yes. X4 means quad. Many of the Phenom II, if not all (that's what I've heard) were originally quads, so they are NATIVE quads, and can be unlocked. AMD just locked two of the cores to fill in the gap for models.
