Unlocking phones for Verizon- Ericsson

Ok, I'm pretty much a newbie when it comes to cellphones, so please deal with me. :)
From what I read in the Verizon sticky above, I think that I cannot activate a phone with a SIM card. I do not want to renew my plan, or sign into any more for a new phone, so I learned that I can buy a "unlocked" phone, and activate it with Verizon for a small fee. I want a good music phone, and Im not interested in the juke, so I'm thinking of getting a Sony Ericsson w610i.
Could I buy this phone unlocked and activate it with Verizon?

Now to answer the op question.

You will need to buy another phone. Cancel you other sevice. GSM phones do not work for the Verizon network.

If want to use Verizon. He could get an inpulse phone from wal-mart or Verizon website.

You could also use one of Verizon MVNO
pagepluscellular com I use them myself. They sell page plus phones on their website and at village pantry. However, airtimes pins can be bought online, and at speedway service stations.

There are other Verizon Mvnos but you will need a CDMA phone. Carefull on buying those. Airvoice and others.
