Unlocking A T-Mobile 8100

So I've been looking up some info on how to unlock an 8100 and it looks like it's supposed to be done in the Sim Card Menu... my question is does my sim card have to be in it. I don't want my sim unlocked, I'm looking to unlock my old 8100 and give it to my girlfriend so she can use my employee plan with AT&T. So do I need to put my sim card in my old phone and then call TMO for the unlock code or what?

Yes you need to put your sim card in the BB when unlocking. The sim card will not be damaged or 'unlocked 'in any way. You are unlockin the device rather than the sim card.
 
I have used other sim cards besides tmobile to unlock tmobile phones it should work as long as there is a sim card inside the phone.

If you don't have the unlock code call tmobile if your account is with them and they should be able to give u the code if no tmo acc u can search on ebay I use fastcellunlock from ebay and they are really fast at getting the code to u longest time I waited is 24hrs least was 4hrs
