unlocked phone won't pick up service

Hello.
I purchased an unlocked phone. I put the sim card in, turn on phone, and it looks for service. I cannot find service. When I try to find it manualy it tells me to try again later. Any advise?

I tried 2 different T-mobile cards and an AT&T. same thing.

The phone is a nokia and I use T-mobile

What model of nokia are you using? If it is a newer model you could be using a non 3g sim card in a 3g phone, this can cause problems like this, Does the phone say "Offline" where the operator name should be?
