how can i make a unlocked phone accept ota. it come back with an errer saying that it cannot be done at this time.. do i have to have service?

uhhh yeah you have to have serivce for it to complete OTA programming

OTA = over the air programming
To get it to program over OTA you must:
A) Have the correct MDN and MIN in the phone
B) Have the ESN Validated with cricket (15.00 esn change charge for current customers unless your local non-company owned store will give ya a little break)
C) Have at least 1-2 bars of service

ok thnks for that info that would explane why it wont go through. but i understand that it is over the air programming.. what does it program?

Its giving you a new version of the Cricket PRL (Preferred Roaming list) which is how your phone know's which tower's to connect to. That's all.

it also programs your phone to the T: if its a native cricket hand set.
