Unlock without hitting menu?

I thought the entire point of the unlock pattern was to replace an unlock combo (like the iphone's slider). However, to turn on the phone you have to hit power, hit menu, then (optionally) do the pattern.

I like the security of the pattern, but the extra step to turn it on is really annoying. Is there a way to just have the pattern screen come up instead of the "hit menu to unlock" screen when you hit power?

No. The menu screen is there for a reason. Say if you have the pattern you press menu by accident and while the phone is in your pocket. It will move the pattern around. And it will not let you unlock without waiting. Its just another extra security feature

Use your thumb, slide the screen out just a little bit until you see the last row of the keyboard then let it go. Now you don't have to hit any button to get to unlock pattern screen.

I get rather annoyed by this as well. Flipping the screen open has been the only resolution I've known of, but, I'd like to keep the screen flipping to a minimum if I could. Oh well.

umm... no it is a compacitive screen meaning it does not work unless touched by your finger. the patter would not do anything unless your hand was in your pocket....

this is not true. You don't have to hit power first.

All you have to do is, (while the phone is sleeping with the screen off),
hit menu, pattern. done.

its two steps.

It's just kind of a pain, if you're texting back and forth, to have to do that each time after a screen timeout. I've never had a phone that doesn't have the option to disable any sort of screen/keyboard lock.

CAPACITIVE, not compacitive

And, the device can't differentiate between the skin on your finger or the skin on your thigh. If your pockets were thin, etc., it is definitely possible for your thigh to interact with the screen.

Capacitive screens will react to anything that conducts electricity. Whether that is the SKIN on you finger, or the SKIN on your thigh - doesn't make a difference.

All that being said, however, it would be highly unlikely that your thigh would successfully input your security lock pattern.

Hate to be a nitpicker, but capacitive screens don't work on conductivity but rather capacitance (the ability to "STORE" current). You can rub a screwdriver or any other metallic (conductive) object on the screen all you like.

So while some of your story is true, learn what you are correcting someone about beforehand or you just look like a Google god.

First, After your screen time's out. Its 2 presses of the menu key to get to the home screen right? One to wake it up, then again to unlock it. That's how it works for me.

OK... to avoid confusion....

If you have a pattern setup, you hit menu ONCE, enter pattern
If you do NOT have a pattern setup, you hit menu TWICE

This is where the issue lies. Squeakypants put that extra step in there not knowing that he didn't need to hit the power button first.

*looks at thread title*

How exactly would you like to unlock your G1, squeaky?

I had an idea, let me know if it's stupid. But what about a program that keeps the screen from locking and instead, after a certain amount of time (2 minutes, etc..) the screen goes black (saving battery power) and it just has a small white dot or circle that moves aimlessly around the screen; something similar to a screen saver on a desktop. To start the phone, you'd just click on the moving circle. Seems like that would prevent it from being accidentally clicked, and you wouldn't have to use any button presses to get the phone up and going. Maybe you could have this run for like 2 hours before the screen just locks as it does now.
