Unlock phone? i asked earlier...?

hi. i asked this before but i want to add something else. i know now that i can use an at and t or cingular phone cause they have the same sim cards as tracfone. but if i get an unlocked phone and use my sim card i can put minutes on that phone right? like it will b just like having a tracfone? like im not paying as i go like regular at and t or cingular phones...
