Hey there, well I'm a senior in high school who is desperately trying to get accepting to the University of Washington - Seattle.
The prompt I want to choose is:
"Tell us a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it."
I've tried to think of an experience that impacted my life in some way but I honestly can't think of one good enough for me to write about. I want to write something that I'm passionate about and I want the admissions people to see that.
I believe I found one that I can most definitely write about but I'm unsure if it'll make me look bad or good...
What I would like to write about is my experience of trying to get into a great University - such as the University of Washington - against the odds. But the thing is, is that "odds" in my topic are my academics. My GPA is a 3.262 and my SATs aren't the greatest but I want to tell them in my essay to look past a lot of that and consider me based on my passion to achieve my goals - one being to get accepted to the UW.
To support this, I have the academic class rigor - 2 years of Running Start, about 20 plus college credits (shows I'm ready and prepared for college), a full schedule my senior year which consists of AP Biology and Running Start classes (my total classes I'm taking this year would be 10-12+ classes, most students would have only 6 classes their senior year), GPA trend is rising (3.1 frosh to 3.5 Junior yr) - as well as volunteer stuff and association with clubs at my high school. I am also a minority, a first-gen college student, and reside 20 minutes away from Seattle.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that, although my GPA is lame because of my first two years of high school weren't my strongest years, I have progressed through high school positively because I'm determined to get into the UW.
Again, I'm afraid of choosing this topic because although it portrays my tenacity and determination to achieve my goals, it'll also show the negative side of my high school career.
So any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I really need opinions before I can start writing.
I have honestly, never, ever, ever been so determined before in my life then now by trying to get into the University of Washington.
Thanks so much!
ANOTHER THING: Is this a unique topic? I want my essay to stand out and be original. The last thing I want is to write on a generic topic that makes my entire essay generic. Thanks!
