United 93

I hadn't seen any trailers or anything, but I knew this was coming and was definately going to see it. I saw it at the first available time on Friday and thought that it was a TERRIFIC movie that highly respects every aspect of the 9/11 tragedy and was just wondering who saw it and what they thought. I don't know if you guys saw "The Flight That Fought Back" on Discovery a few months ago though, I preferred that to be honest.

Just a few differences I noticed between the two:

In FTFB...
-...the terrorist rocked the plane more and at different times (a bit of a petty note lol).
-...either the Terrorists/Hostages used the fire axe, think it was the terrorists who held it up to the door when the hostages were trying to knock it down. Although it's easy to say that now, the hostages should've got that if they didn't and hit the guy in the seat over the head (in FTFB some of them managed to get their hanRAB on the controls, In U93 they didn't).
-...it was the Hostages who used the trolly first from the back of the plane not the terrorists at the front.
-...I think the passengers used a fire extinguisher as a weapon instead of the terrorists.
-...how the terrorists got into the cockpit was a bit different I think in FTFB, they were in the toilets for ages and the fligt attendant asked them to come out, then I forget... XD
-...from the photos the people looked more like the real people.

Some of those probably wrong (or a bit stupid), I really can't remember, but there are a few differences, suppose it doesn't really matter. Anyway, there will always be different accounts though I think as no one is actually sure what happened it is just what they thought happened. People have said the director "made sure this movie is backed only by facts and not what they beleive happened." How? Since when was there a camera crew on board the plane? Anyway to give the director credit he did do a good job. Heck, it could've been exagerated to make it seem more exciting but they both tell the same sort of horiffic story and I don't think anyone would want to mess with it really.

The Flight That Fought Back had interviews and stuff too which was good and I can't remember if this was another programme (it might've been) but it went into what the terrorists did before 9/11 such as flying lessons etc. It was the same kinda thing, was on for a couple for a couple of hours and had a lot of well done dramatic scenes with interviews/doccumentary features etc. I think I would've enjoyed this more if I hadn't seen that, but I suppose this has brought it to the masses and people have been to see it who wouldn't normally watch it on TV. You might think you wont like it, or it's shocking whatever, I know a lot of people who didn't think they would like it that enjoyed it.

One good thing I liked though about U93 was the fact that a lot of the cast was the real people involved, such as some of the controllers I think, you could tell really. :D It was good that they didn't put big movie stars in too, it gave you a sense of them all being ordinary people. It seems a lot more like a fly-on-the-wall doccumentary in that aspect plus there's no fancy special effects, music, dialogue and so on.

It enRAB quite abruptly though when the plane crashes and just goes to a black screen with a few facts and such. Apparently in the American one they had all the names go across the screen at the end which was a nice touch but I never saw that. A lot have said it was very emotional the ending but I didn't find it that way, it was bad sure, but I didn't find it "emotional." I've got a heart of steel :D. I don't mean to sound morbid but in FTFB you got to see it crash and talked about the aftermath and such, but I suppose this was meant to be like that for effect.

Ages and ages and ages ago before not many knew about the events I wrote an "original writing" story peice based on this for an assignment and now the examiner will now where I stole the idea from hehehehe... Well they said you could use a real life event.

A few questions though... At the end it said the Military guys didn't know the plane had been hijacked until 4 minutes after it crashed, but weren't they all saying it's another hijack and getting ready to scramble jets? Also how did that guy get all the fake bomb stuff through - I presume because it was just everyday items...?

Anyway if you haven't seen either go and see it, it's pretty damn good: 7.5/10. A nice change from all the other stuff at the moment, sounRAB pretty awful but I like plane crash programmes/planes in general. You obviously wont like it though if you don't like watching scenes of terror, or if you don't like patriotic American movies. :p

And by the way, I saw a trailer for the next patriotic American movie - "World Trade Center" (people have said this is "disgusting and disrepectful", I think it looks entertaining, I've heard nothing but good reviews for U93. It's not even out yet, people thought the same about this.) and that looked pretty good, starring Nicolas Cage as a police officer going into one of the towers. That might go into what happens on the other planes as nothings been made about that - probably because this was more heroic - but anyway I doubt it.

Sheesh, I've rambled on for ages, sorry.

I saw it earlier in the week, it's the first movie that's ever made me cry in the cinema, the final ten minutes were especially harrowing. I just couldn't comprehend having to make a goodbye phone call home to my loved ones.

Was the flight that fought back the one that keifer sutherland narrated? I saw that one and wondered whether this one would match up. Think I will go and see it to compare the two.

Another voice adding to praise of the film. Pretty much flawless work from cast and crew - very unsentimental and naturalistic.

I saw a poster for World Trade Center on the way out, and I have seen the trailer for that. I looks like everything that United 93 wasn't - shamelssly patriotic sentiment and manipulative as hell. A real wasted opportunity. United 93 shows how it should be done - yes people were heroes on that day. but it is far more powerful if this is underplayed.

Reading this thread, I will always be amazed at conspiracy theorists need to believe something utterly ridiculous rather than the extremely uncomfortable truth.

I went to see this film last night - all I can say is wow.

The acting and cinematography was very convincing, although the shaky camerawork got a bit nauseating in the last five minutes.

The whole film was really frightening to be honest, and my heart was pounding when the hijacking and the power struggle at the end were taking place.

It was very uncomforting to watch, but that didn't mean it wasn't excellent.

Not wishing to get into conspiracy theories but as someone with more than a passing involvement in aviation, I can assure you that a flight with a low load factor is very unlikely to get 'cancelled'. Only bad weather, ATC problems or an aircraft mechanical defect will cancel a flight. An airline schedule is rather like a spiders web in that each flight is interconnected with the previous one and the one after.

For example an aircraft flying Boston-LAX would return to Boston from LAX, before flying off somewhere else. The arriving passengers would then be connecting to other flights as similarly would those on the return leg. The pilots and cabin crew themselves also fly multiple legs which leave them 'positioned' at a particular airport to then carry out the next leg. If you cancel flights every time a load factor is low, you can see how you'll end up with aircraft and crews at the wrong airport and the whole schedule falls apart like a pack of carRAB.

*bump*

I just saw United 93 today....I thought it was one of the best films I've ever seen. Wonderful film making, superb acting, although of course, horrific. The attention to detail was incredible, and it was so absorbing. It gave me goose bumps. This is what cinema is all about.

to me this is just another hijack movie, yes i know what it is about but it just doesn't appeal to me,
+ i am a bit of a conspiracy theorist so i see this and the other 9/11 movie with Nicolas Cage a bit distracting and a bending of the truth. seeing as we don't really know what happen on that plane and there has been more than 1 story.

Someone told me Gregg Henry from Slither was one of the name actors in it, but I don't think I've ever heard of him or seen any of his films, probably why I didn't pick him up... Yeah he's been in a lot of stuff but I wouldn't really call him huge, more. There are a few recognizable ones but I meant it didn't have any massive names and such. If there was some on the plane for example it wouldn't of worked really. Other than the quality of the filming, it's hard to believe that United 93 was even done by Hollywood. There's no BS (well not too much) with big stars, love affairs, side plots etc. Just the story.

There was a "making of" on last night at 8pm on Sky Movies 1, that probably explained a few questions, but I missed it. Anyone know when/if ir's on again?

By the way, I didn't write that all out the other morning... Sheesh, a bit early. :D My internet was screwing up the night before so I saved it in a .txt file then copied and pasted it.

Most excellent film THE FLIGHT THAT FOUGHT BACK and it was Mr. Sutherland who narrated it. I'm off to see UNITED 93 tomorrow.....

I know this is a bit of an old thread but i saw United 93 last night and thought it was amazing. Seeing the WTC's hit on our big TV sent chills down my spione and made me well up - after all this time.

The acting was fantastic - one fo the best films i have seen for a long time. I am looking forward to seeing World Trade Centre now.

I think its kinda weird to make a movie so soon after to be honest. Also as other people have said unless you was on bored nobody really knows what happened. So its all just here say and lets be honest we will never know the full extent of what went on that plane. Also i dont get why there has been such a big deal made about flight 93 they had the info that the two plans going into the world trade centres didnt so of course they tried to stop it but that doesnt make them any better than the people that died in the world trade centres imo.

The last 10-15 mins of this movie are really sad. This is this the only movie that i have seen were i've left the cinema feeling sad.
