I hadn't seen any trailers or anything, but I knew this was coming and was definately going to see it. I saw it at the first available time on Friday and thought that it was a TERRIFIC movie that highly respects every aspect of the 9/11 tragedy and was just wondering who saw it and what they thought. I don't know if you guys saw "The Flight That Fought Back" on Discovery a few months ago though, I preferred that to be honest.
Just a few differences I noticed between the two:
In FTFB...
-...the terrorist rocked the plane more and at different times (a bit of a petty note lol).
-...either the Terrorists/Hostages used the fire axe, think it was the terrorists who held it up to the door when the hostages were trying to knock it down. Although it's easy to say that now, the hostages should've got that if they didn't and hit the guy in the seat over the head (in FTFB some of them managed to get their hanRAB on the controls, In U93 they didn't).
-...it was the Hostages who used the trolly first from the back of the plane not the terrorists at the front.
-...I think the passengers used a fire extinguisher as a weapon instead of the terrorists.
-...how the terrorists got into the cockpit was a bit different I think in FTFB, they were in the toilets for ages and the fligt attendant asked them to come out, then I forget... XD
-...from the photos the people looked more like the real people.
Some of those probably wrong (or a bit stupid), I really can't remember, but there are a few differences, suppose it doesn't really matter. Anyway, there will always be different accounts though I think as no one is actually sure what happened it is just what they thought happened. People have said the director "made sure this movie is backed only by facts and not what they beleive happened." How? Since when was there a camera crew on board the plane? Anyway to give the director credit he did do a good job. Heck, it could've been exagerated to make it seem more exciting but they both tell the same sort of horiffic story and I don't think anyone would want to mess with it really.
The Flight That Fought Back had interviews and stuff too which was good and I can't remember if this was another programme (it might've been) but it went into what the terrorists did before 9/11 such as flying lessons etc. It was the same kinda thing, was on for a couple for a couple of hours and had a lot of well done dramatic scenes with interviews/doccumentary features etc. I think I would've enjoyed this more if I hadn't seen that, but I suppose this has brought it to the masses and people have been to see it who wouldn't normally watch it on TV. You might think you wont like it, or it's shocking whatever, I know a lot of people who didn't think they would like it that enjoyed it.
One good thing I liked though about U93 was the fact that a lot of the cast was the real people involved, such as some of the controllers I think, you could tell really.
It was good that they didn't put big movie stars in too, it gave you a sense of them all being ordinary people. It seems a lot more like a fly-on-the-wall doccumentary in that aspect plus there's no fancy special effects, music, dialogue and so on.
It enRAB quite abruptly though when the plane crashes and just goes to a black screen with a few facts and such. Apparently in the American one they had all the names go across the screen at the end which was a nice touch but I never saw that. A lot have said it was very emotional the ending but I didn't find it that way, it was bad sure, but I didn't find it "emotional." I've got a heart of steel
. I don't mean to sound morbid but in FTFB you got to see it crash and talked about the aftermath and such, but I suppose this was meant to be like that for effect.
Ages and ages and ages ago before not many knew about the events I wrote an "original writing" story peice based on this for an assignment and now the examiner will now where I stole the idea from hehehehe... Well they said you could use a real life event.
A few questions though... At the end it said the Military guys didn't know the plane had been hijacked until 4 minutes after it crashed, but weren't they all saying it's another hijack and getting ready to scramble jets? Also how did that guy get all the fake bomb stuff through - I presume because it was just everyday items...?
Anyway if you haven't seen either go and see it, it's pretty damn good: 7.5/10. A nice change from all the other stuff at the moment, sounRAB pretty awful but I like plane crash programmes/planes in general. You obviously wont like it though if you don't like watching scenes of terror, or if you don't like patriotic American movies.
And by the way, I saw a trailer for the next patriotic American movie - "World Trade Center" (people have said this is "disgusting and disrepectful", I think it looks entertaining, I've heard nothing but good reviews for U93. It's not even out yet, people thought the same about this.) and that looked pretty good, starring Nicolas Cage as a police officer going into one of the towers. That might go into what happens on the other planes as nothings been made about that - probably because this was more heroic - but anyway I doubt it.
Sheesh, I've rambled on for ages, sorry.
