Uninformed Canadian wants to know about America's "gun culture"?

I have been to the US on several occasions - Texas Tennessee California and of course Florida (and passed through a number of other States) ---- all of this was about a decade ago

I have never really understood the whole gun culture thing you have going down there - I do know it is very important to you

Please tell me about it

I as a Canadian was never once promised the right to have a gun -

I can of course go down to the police station and fill out a large amount of paperwork asking permission to buy a gun - But -- if they say yes then the cops can walk into my house at any time and make sure that I am storing the thing in compliance with a bunch of rules - and of course the cops and whoever else is involved in this process has every right to say --- No , we don't think you should have a gun - and they do not owe me an explanation as to why they said no either

I have never applied -

My knee jerk reaction is as most Canadians is -- Well of course it is the job of the police to take guns away from people

think of it this way, guns are accepted in america just as much as drugs are totally acceptable across canada.

goes back to the American Revolution. Since Canada is still part of the United Kingdom and the Queen is your head of state, you never went through what we did.

Gun violence is a result of large concentrations of poverty more than anything else. The high profile shootings such as columbine get a lot of coverage though, but didnt' something like that just happen in Finland?
 
You aren't going to want to hear this but do you realize Canada continues to exist peacefully because Americans own Guns and have a large military?

It is important because an armed person is a citizen and an unarmed one is a Subject.

It had to do with the revolution. The amendment of the right of bear arms was never really meant for civilians, but for militia.

Anyway, the lack of gun control in the US is why the US has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Why do you need a semi or fully automatic weapon? You never need more than a rifle/shotgun. There are more guns per person in Canada then there are in the US, we just don't have automatic weapons lying around all over the place.

Overall, Americans love their guns and they love their bibles. Not exactly the best combination.
 
Its kind of like middle-aged men with big cars. Some people are insecure about their man parts and need a big gun to compensate and feel like a man.
 
WOW - I would HATE to live in a country where the government makes such decisions for me. Do you have to ask your government what kind of toilet paper you can use as well? Don;t you feel the least bit annoyed that your own government doesn't think you are capable of making safe decisions about how to store your weapons?????

I have no problem with background checks. But law abiding citizens should be able to own guns. Personally I have a concealed weapons permit that allows me to carry my gun just about anywhere. It also means that I am a LAW ABIDING citizen. If I were to ever break the law, I would loose that right.

Study your history - Many rulers on several continents banned their people from owning weapons as a means of control.

Personally - I don;t want to have to wait 20 minutes for the police to arrive when a burglar/rapist breaks into my home. I could be dead before they even get there. I rather like the fact that an intruder never knows for sure if a home owner has a weapon or not. If guns are banned completely, it will be free pickings - law abiding citizens will be completely helpless and at the mercy of criminals.
 
2 cultures

1 urban, some feel they need a gun for protection

2 rural, usually for hunting, I know families who depend on harvesting game to feed their families.

All fall under the same laws, I guess it has it's issues, but in England and Russia and other countries they use homemade air guns to kill each other so not sure if it's the problem or just makes it easier.
 
Guns have maybe become too much of a good thing in this country.

However our legal right to own them is guaranteed by our constitution so that we may defend our freedom if we have to. Sure, the government passes laws to protect our freedom but the only thing that will keep a dictator from taking over is the fact that our citizens will never permit it and have the means to prevent it. If you guys ever need help up there. Just give us a call. We'll get you the guns and ammunition to overthrow an oppressive dictator. Heck we may even join in.
 
It's to protect us from the British Army I think... Or our own government? Or to shoot moose with just for fun.

I think most people buy it for protection. I'd never get one though.
 
Your best bet is the National Rifle Association. Most Americans believe in their Constitutional right to own and bear arms. (I'll break character here for a moment and admit that I do not allow myself to own any because of fits of depression. I would only need one bullet...) There are many false remarks about gun ownership and myths that have been circulated, and people will cite that nonsense to "prove" to you that (a) we don't have the right to own firearms, and (b) firearms are evil.

Long ago the British tried to take the guns and ammunition away from Americans. It didn't turn out to well for them.
