Underrated Cartoons

I am in complete agreement. I had heard many bad things about “Viva Pi?ata” and I refused to watch it, as I was one of those who thought that it was little more than a cheap marketing ploy designed to sale more merchandise. However, D Dubbs made a thread for the series last month and I decided to give it a shot, though I did so reluctantly; I went to the official website and, even then, tried to talk myself out of watching the series due to all of the bad things that I had heard. I must admit that the opening sequence didn’t help, as it doesn’t really make the series seem all too enjoyable, but I held my tongue and my gambit paid off. “Viva Pi?ata” became one of my favorite animated programs.

It’s tragic that hardly anybody cares about the series, especially in this day and age where people crave originality. “Viva Pi?ata” has a plot that is unlike any other animated program that I have ever seen.
 
Two words. The. Batman.

There are two types of people who hate it, apparently...

1. People who wanted to like it but were turned off by the mediocre, merchandise-based first season and didn't stick around to see it turn itself around with the first season finale.

2. Rabid and/or elitist DCAU fans who insist that the DCAU Batman has to be the only animated take on Batman and that nobody else should try their own interpratations.

Number 1 is excusable, but number 2 is ignorance to a high degree. Yes, BTAS was awesome and will quite possibly remain the best animated Batman. But Batman has always a character who has gone through many changes and interpratations, and one version shouldn't monopolize the character. Batman should be free to continue to evolve and change, as he has in the past.

And besides, The Batman was a very good show in the end, despite it's first season. It's no BTAS, but c'mon people, what the hell is?
 
I third that motion, and agree on Sheep, Megas, and The Batman as well.

I've got another one, too: Catscratch. The characters were interesting (Hovis and the bear caught my attention), the comedy was exceptional, and the art and animation weren't bad at all. Not to mention is was Doug TanNaple's doing; I guess it wasn't as well recieved as the book of his it was derived from, but I liked it quite a bit and wish it could've done better.
 
Digimon - Great story and character devlopment. Relatable subjects that people can identify with, deals with subject like death, divorce, adoption, etc. Hit or miss with the other seasons, but season one is defentely underrated. The original Adventures series is one of the best written anime series ever.

I am not saying it didn't have commercial success, but as far as getting the critical recongnistion it deserved, it is under appreciated.
 
I don’t know. “Digimon” may not have reached the level of success that “Pok?mon” managed to obtain, but it was quite popular in its own right. I believe that “Monster Rancher” was actually the most underrated of such shows; I haven’t seen it in years, but I know that I really enjoyed it when I was younger. However, people seldom talk about the series and it didn’t last anywhere near as long as the others.
 
My choice for most underrated goes to Captain N: The Game Master. I thought it was a well done show that got the axe way before it's time was up. I find it underrated in the fact that everyone I know who loved it to death way back when had forgotten about it until I told them it was out on dvd, even then they didn't care. They have since come to their senses, but still.
 
Well I was talking more about critical underrated compared to critical acclaimed animes like Sailor Moon, Cowboy Bebop, Death Note, One Piece, etc., not to a show like Pokemon which hardly is a critic darling, and lacks any deep story telling like Digimon and these other shows I mentioned.

It is nothing to do with ratings or merchandise sales, on why I consider Digimon underrated. Pokemon can have its ratings, merchandise sales, and commerical success. The lack of such things is not what I care about.

It is because Digimon gets lump in with Pokemon as a kids show with little substance, it doesn't get the credit it deserves. The general perseption is, it is a nice kids shows that kids would like, when in reality it is a nice show that anyone from any age can watch, relate and understand. But that is just my opinion.
 
I can't believe nobody's mentioned American Dad yet. It's getting better and better, while Family Guy is getting crappier and crappier.
 
If we're counting cartoon movies, I'd add Fern Gully. I really liked it when it first came out, and I think bats are especially cool in animated form.
 
I love this movie!!!(and watch it often...I got it on DVD for $7.50 a couple years ago)...It has great songs (I like "Tell Me Lies" the most,though "Nothin's Gonna Stop Us Now" is also great),and I love all the characters,especially Danny and Sawyer...

for TV series,I think King of the Hill is extremely underrated....All I ever seem to hear about the show is that either...
1) it's boring (not true,IMO,there's alot of laugh-out-loud moments in every episode...Dale never fails to make me smile)

2)What's the point in it being animated,since it could easily be done in live-action?....I like KOTH's more "realistic" style (who says animation always has to be something that can't happen in reality?),and the animation helps for freak-outs/dream sequences....
 
Meh. King of the Hill just isn't my style. That and even at 21 I'm still fairly uncomfortable with characters named Bobby (okay, Robert), because that's my name. It's part of the reason why I never watched Bobby's World.
 
I have to agree with you. But i already bashed this series and their fans without reasons but since i watch it, i'm forced to admit that this show wasn't gross and bad at all.

It's just a shame this show was not recognised anymore. :(
 
With all due respect, I believe that it’s a bit of a stretch to say that “Digimon” was underrated merely because it wasn’t granted the same level of critical acclaim as “Cowboy Bebop”. The reason that “Digimon” will always be compared to “Pok?mon” is that they were both monster based shows and were competing for the same demographics. Last I checked, “Digimon” managed to hold its own and it was popular; it may not have managed to reach the level of popularity that “Pok?mon” had in its prime, but it was popular. That’s why I disagree with you, and that’s why I say that “Monster Rancher” was the one that was actually underrated.

I suppose that we’ll just have to agree to disagree.
