Underrated Animated Films

I honestly quite liked Osmosis Jones, people say the live action parts dragged the movie on too long, but I enjoyed those parts since Bill Murray is basically Homer Simpson and his daughter is like Lisa trying to get him to eat right and exercise more often, the animated scenes are great too, it got an animated series called Ozzy and Drix which wasn't really as good, but decent none the less.

I also liked Ralph Bakshi's Hey Good Lookin', I'm glad he went back to the cartoony look of films like Heavy Traffic, it also had great voice acting and music, it was even quite funny at times with Crazy Shapiro's antics.

Another one you guys should check out is Tarzoon: Shame Of The Jungle (Jungle Burger in the UK), It's basically a sci-fi, phallic version of a Tarzan film, but it's really funny, the sight gags really make the movie, it might not appeal to some people since it's rather violent (an african native is eaten in half by a lion and a gorilla get's his spine punched out) and has a lot of cartoon breasts and walking willies.

Another one to check out is Rock and Rule which is Nelvana's first animated film, if you like 80s rock music and animation, it's a great film, it has a kind of Don Bluth meets Ralph Bakshi feel to it.

I agree that The Prince of Egypt and The Secret of NIMH are underrated. The Prince of Egypt had some great songs and some beautiful animation that mixed well together. The Secret of NIMH also had such a dark tone in its story, especially considering how it was still aimed at children. I also liked the storyline of mice gaining intelligence like that in a lab.

One other movie that I think is underrated is All Dogs Go to Heaven. Yes, it did get a sequel and an animated series, but both of those barely had any kind of connection to the original film. Plus, even though both the sequel and series had some cute and fun moments, they both seriously paled in comparison to the first movie. The original movie also had a dark tone with Charlie pretty much being attacked by a dog like mob, how he originally died and the nightmare in which he fears that he's sent to hell. Besides that, I loved the character development for Charlie and the ending can still make me cry to this day.

A pair of Dreamworks movies that don't get any respect:

Flushed Away - Aardman's only CG project; this film makes me giggle with its subtle humor (okay, there's a pain montage that's not so subtle - if you've seen the film, you know what I mean - but it cracks me up).

The Road to El Dorado - Essentially an animated Hope/Crosby movie with great jokes, terrific voice work by Kevin Kline and Kenneth Branagh and a fine score by Hans Zimmer and John Powell.

Here I wasn't referring to success, but the regard that people hold it in. I feel that when people refer to great animated movies that they don't get mentioned. But yes, they made a lot more money than any other films on this list. The Emperor's New Groove comes to mind in that vein too.

I do like that people are bringing up Secret of NIMH, Road to El Dorado and Mystery of the Batwoman.

If you are talking about shows loved by the general populace but hated by critics, I gots millions. Any of the Shrek sequels anyone? But if you are talking about a show disregarded by the general public, but loved by critics, then Iron Giant perhaps would be the best example I can think of. It is often lauded by critics as one of the best animated films ever, despite performing abysmally in the US market. Though it earned its keep worldwide, it arguably wasn't a success by typical standards. Definitely not enough to earn a sequel, though arguably the show couldn't have a sequel without losing its meaning.

Agreed on Iron Giant definitely. Also have to add Treasure Planet. It's a very imaginative take on Treasure Island and bombed due to lousy marketing (and general distaste for the sci-fi genre apparently.)

Gotta agree with you there. It's a classic, dark, Don Bluth movie about how a dog has to redeem himself. I don't understand why it's disdained. If you want a bad Don Bluth movie, watch Rock-a-doodle *shivers* or Troll in the Central Park (ugh!)
