unauthorized downloads

T-Mobile is trying to charge me $78 for ringtones/downloads for my 8700g that I never asked for and furthermore never received. I have NEVER downloaded any such items in my 3 years with T-Mobile. They tell me these are valid charges that were ordered from my handset. Interesting point is they were all done between midnight and 6:00am on 12/24 . . . . while I was asleep and BB was next to me. Obviously I am disputing. Of greater concern to me is how I can prevent this from happening again. This fraud could have cost far more than $78. Anybody heard of this type of problem? And what can I do to protect myself?

Hi BRENTAM, welcome to rabroad. TMO can find out the origin of the ringtones, JAMSTER, etc...

Further investigation can be performed with that company...

Good suggestion. TMO should also have the technology to tell me what tower those downloads went through, right? I was not at home that night.

TMO customer service has not been helpful. They claim someone had my handset and legitmately did those downloads. Just didn't happen, especially at that hour, and the stuff that was downloaded was hip hop songs, pink camo wallpaper, and 5 games. Just not stuff I am remotely interested in. No, my kids did not have my cell phone. Phone was three feet from my head on the nightstand.

Concerned my SIM card/BB has been cloned. Could happen again for even bigger $$.

Well I know tmobile has changed a lot of there policies about accessing accounts and verifications. So if someone accessed your tmobile account you might want to add a password onto the account that would have to be verified instead of using the last four of your social. If you sent a message to any of those commercials that say send a text to 55555 and get a free ringtine then those are going to charge like 9.99$ a month. ~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

jonny, yep, already placed a new password on both tmo.com and phone contact with TMO. I have NEVER responded to any solicitation for ringtones.

TMO customer service has changed their story since I started contacting them. First it was someone had accessed my tmo.com password and downloaded the products. Most recent contact was with a second level TMO supervisor who said the products were ordered via my BB. Next step is written communication disputing the charges.

But the TMO rant is for another forum. I am looking for comments from the BB community on whether anyone has had a similar problem or has any suggestions on how to prevent something like this from happening. Thanks.

brentam! i have had this problem twice!
first on my bb - with jamster sending me texts and then all the sudden charges appearing on my bill - disputed and resolved in same call with cingular
the second time wasn't so easy...jamster (or another company similiar to jamster) sent a text message to my 12 yo son's phone. he replied and what'd ya think happened? $50 worth of 'downloads' that never appeared on his phone. cingular hasn't resolved that yet.

Hey not sure if this is related but,I don't even have a data pack for my phone, just a prepaid sim, and suddenly I seem able to browse the internet with my bb. I can't even send an sms at the month cause no credit. Anyone know how that works?
Otherwise, haven't had your problem so unable to advise... ~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

this happened to my cousins although it was "only" $12 dollars in text messages. They were adamant in the billing of the charges and didnt want to budge. I guess your best bet is write or speak to someone from corporate

What you can do send me your mobile number and I can pull up the info and see if I can get it credited back to you to help save you some of the trouble. If you want to pin me 23E24922~via BB (wap.rabroad.com)~

same thing happened to me ... except mine were on 12/20 and only 5.99 each .. polyringtone club something or other. Which is stupid .. cuz I make my own ringtones .. the only one i've ever downloaded was J. Timberlake -Sexy back way back during my first week .. when i didn't know how to make my own ringtones.-- I don't understand how T-Mobile would want me to pay for something I didn't authorize .. nor did I receive!

Lemme know how if and when your situation gets resolved..

~songstress3. You may have a pre paid plan but if your getting online and receiving text messages a charge will eventually show up (I know from expierence) and since u don't have data plan..the bill could be huge! No such thing as free data use(trust me) and they are gonna sock it to u if u don't call ur provider..my 2 cents

~sonfstress3 I just reread what u wrote.. You can't text or receive messages..but can use internet ahhh! The same thing happened to my teenager, she didn't mention she could now use the internet, she was prepaid also. I guess she thought since she didn't order it she(me) didn't have to pay. Well 2 months later her service sent me a bill (for2 months use of internet) they charged per kb since no data plan, ill just say it was a few hundred dollars and she's still working extra hours to pay me back. Believe me u don't want that surprise good luck lesa
