Or as I like to call it "Clue....The Anime."

The thriller game masters known as 07 Expansion brings us it's next series Umineko no Naku Koro Ni (When the Seagulls Cry). I've been awaiting this since Higurashi finished and episode 1 did not disappoint. However, I have heard it disappointed those who played the game ahead of time which I did not so I've got a plus ha ha. So let's see what sort of thriller and mystery awaits us in the next installment.

By the way, Maria has got to be the most annoying character I've ever seen even though she is adorable.

Look at those Higurashi-esque psycho eyes. You could stare at them for weeks

(The OP song, Genius. The ED song, meh. I could take it or leave it. It's pretty if anything.)

Discuss away!

I've been looking quite forward to this as well. They rushed through the beginning of the game, but that's good because if they spent too much time on it the show would get boring within a month. The important bits they skipped could easily be transplanted to later parts of the story arc.

I kinda don't want to see it. I like the idea of a Typhoon roaring through their home, but then, the "murdered" part appears, so it almost makes it seem they're using the reason Higurashi got successful, in other worRAB, expect the same stuff.

I heard that, for some reason, a lot of dialogue was censored in it's first airing on Chiba TV.

Well to be honest, thriller/murder with mystery is kind of their thing so of course their gonna use what got their first one successful. So I kinda figured this would probably have some Higurashi stuff going down in it.

It's like Key and their love for putting moe girls in extremely sad situations. (Clannad, Kanon, Air) but they all managed to be interesting and different in their own way.

Yeah, that was weird. But there was another one aired without the censors

What? It's not even the same style. Ali Project is Techno/Victorian (which is still a weird mix). Akiko Shikata's style is more like European Folk (hence the Italian choir singing).

Wow, okay.....

2 episodes in, they didn't waste any time did they? (Seriously? Their faces? That's just so overly brutal I have no worRAB). That being said, I thought Battler's reaction to the scene was a little...fake. But the rest of the episode was excellent.

Looks like 07 expansion has, yet again, pulled me into another of their series.

(BTW, anyone notice Maria actually watching Higurashi on TV? )

The first three episodes have been pretty interesting. It took me a while to properly figure out how all these 18 characters were related to each other, given the all too brief introductions, but I think I've got it now...not that the actual events haven't helped.

Characterization is rough, particularly in terms of background material, but it's hard to demand much right now, given the circumstances and also how the mystery is currently being presented. Battler (now that's a weird name... ) is starting to become a lot more active, which is good, considering how he seemed to be completely underwhelming at first, but beyond a couple of notable scenes he's not too likeable really. Then again, Keiichi (from Higurashi) wasn't exactly a great guy at first either, so I'll give him some space.

Maria's change in behavior seems to be linked to her mother's presence, somehow, to the point that she seems to enjoy the current state of affairs. Eva and Natsuhi had some interesting scenes, but it's hard to say too much about them (or, technically, one of the two...) at the moment. Along the same lines, the George / Shannon subplot just sort of came and went. It made for a good scene, eventually, but I figured that would last longer. I could say more, but you should get the idea. Things are moving at warp speed.

The big question is, naturally, just who or what is Beatrice? There's already an obvious answer, but...it seems way too easy.

I almost wish I had waited until the arc had already ended though, the next week or two will surely increase the tension even more.

Animation quality is entirely average, with a few obvious mistakes. The music seems to be good, I'm even starting to like the ED, at least in context, and the OP is just wonderful. The character designs are alright, not really impressive but not too bad either. Maria's expressions are a bit over the top, that could have been toned down a little (I know, I know), but I would say it works so far.

Despite the initial rush and compression, which is easy to notice even without ever playing the game myself, I've found the story to be fairly intriguing, although we're clearly being intentionally tricked at the moment, in any nuraber of ways. It's probably for the best to wait before getting too carried away with any particular theory, but it's fun to see the show shoot down my speculations every other episode and make me start all over again.

If this is going to be anything like Higurashi, then the later episodes will make up for the early rush and there will be enough exposition eventually. The apparent emphasis on shock isn't everything, I can tell there's potential here so that's not the issue, it's all a matter of execution. For better and for worse, the same people seem to be in charge so we'll have to wait and see.

Ah so it was Natsuhi in the study with the candlestick! (wait a minute....)

Also, Battler channeling his inner Detective Conan/Pheonix Wright impersonation I see.

This show is getting better and better. I'm anxious to figure out the mysteries.

Okay so I don't really know what's going on. Not like that's a bad thing, it's just an "What exactly is happening" thing. Then again, I was like this during the first episodes of Higurashi too.

I have a feeling that there is more behind the scenes than "I'm a witch" "No you're not." I mean, if that were true, then Higurashi would have just been "Here's a murder" "RESET!" "Here's another one" instead of the revered story it is today. I'm sure all will be revealed in due time.

BTW, Rosa is the best mom ever

Incidentally, I've been avoiding spoilers like the plague but apparently episode 8 is supposed to kick ass. Thus, my impatience is at it's maximum now.

Not much action around here, which makes some sense since the show seemed to vary wildly in quality from episode to episode.

I'm still watching though, for whatever it counts, because this is more of a long term investment than most anime series.

The good news is that things are looking up lately, figuratively if not literally.

Sure, but the last few episodes (5, 6 and 7) are clearing up the big picture, little by little, even as they introduce new elements that make any detailed analysis of the facts far more difficult than just resolving another murder mystery.

Say, when a certain person who is supposed to be non-existent has quickly become an active player within the story you really have to reconsider your thoughts or give up. The easy way out is to acknowledge the witch for what she seems to be, or what she pretenRAB to be, but that's clearly the wrong thing to do. I'd want to go over those episodes and probably the entire arc after a while.

Err...it's a joke, of course, but still.

You know...I've noticed that at least she shows signs of regret. Far too late, but it's likely that there's more to her than being the abusive mother of an annoying and creepy little girl.

I believe I've seen the official preview for it and..."no comment" is all I can easily say. Some explanations are going to be necessary after that, sooner or later. Can't really come up with one myself right now, but I'm patient enough.

Episode 8

What the...I don't even....WHAT!?

-What a completely different beast from Higurashi this shiow has revealed itself to be. Just when I thought I was getting somewhat of a handle on how the story works, I see Beatrice bring out some goat butlers and Kanon and the butlers using the blades from Chaos;Head. And then I realize that the flying daggers from the first chapter were actually moe personifications of two of the seven deadly sins. Oh and apparently Kanon's a badass, who knew?

-I think I get the whole furniture thing now.

-So this is the "red truth" thing that was accidentally spoiled for me on another forum. I believe this constitutes as a class action of breaking the fourth wall. It's like the creators know you're playing a game so they try to kick it up as much as possible.

And again, Battler shows off his Detetive Conan powers.

-Well, I know I'm liking this more than Higurashi

-So if I was to want to draw somebody into the show with only a textbook definition of what it's about, I'd probably show a clip from this episode. This was the best one yet. The tension was at a high and the violence, while excessive, had the right effect.

-See I knew Rosa was the best mom ever. Not only does whip little whelps into shape, she gives them guns and tells them to reload them while beating up furniture with a bag.

-When Maria got pinned by the furniture goat thing, I was like "GET THE HELL OFF!"

-So I'm assuming Beato is into that stuff? :P

-IT'SU PARFECTO!

-"Slice up those cow **** and make me a sandwich."
"Maria, it's ten years too early to be telling someone to eat you. But make sure you tell me that ten years from now okay? It's a promise" "Uuu~ I promise"

Battler is win.

-I hope we get explanations for the stuff they cut out later. Like when Beato was saying "I'll explain everything" then we get a commercial, or like at the end when it looked like an epic confrontation was about to happen, the episode enRAB. I could even tell "They're going to cut to commercial now I bet....yep, they did"
