UMA coming to Android?

I dont know if anyone caught this earliet but BGR is reporting that UMA is finally coming to Android devices-

According to BGR- Tmo is to begin testing UMA calling on android devices starting in 3Q-

This should be awesome!

I was actually shocked to see it not built in when the G1 launched. I figured they would have required it since it was to be their flasgship device at the time. Nice to see that HTC is finally coming forward with one. I wonder if the problems they had (if any) were software or hardware? If software I wonder if they will be able to make it backwards compatible with older devices via OTA upgrades.....

I'd guess the problems were more software than hardware. The only hardware interface required is for cipher initialization with the SIM card, which is identical to the process the hardware must do for standard cell towers. The UMA specification is surprisingly complicated, and there aren't too many software stacks for it. If it's going into all of T-Mobile's future Android handsets regardless of actual manufacturer, the UMA implementation could well be part of Android. Thus, the implementation needs to be acceptably licensed so that the multiple hardware manufacturers can use it. I doubt the existing companies with UMA software stacks would be willing to license something like that in acceptable terms.

I bet the implementation is probably brand new from the UMA specs, and it's just taken this long to complete and validate. If that's the case, a new radio baseband and software update should be sufficient to bring it to existing devices.

Already getting interested in Project Emerald -- and if that device has UMA and is in the same class an HTC EVO, then it's a good candidate to be my next (although it would always feel weird to leave my BB behind!)

Oh please be a part of the Froyo 2.2 distro for the MTS.....That and wifi tether are all the slide needs to be a keeper for a while.
