A quick diagram:

I- o> o> o> [] o>

the first figure (I-):
Is a man holding a gun

The O> are people facing a direction. The > indicates the way they are facing.

[] is a wall.

The o> are buried in the sand and locked in placed facing towards the wall. They cannot see the person behind them but can see the person in front of them.
They are all wearing hats.
2 are red, 2 are black- the hostages know this.
They cannot see their own hat. Hostage 1 and 3 have the red hats on. 2 and 4 have the black hats on.

The man with the guns says that they will be set free if they can guess the correct colour of their hat but they cannot communicate with each other. If they dont they will be shot. they also know the other man is on the other side of the wall.

Which of the 4 men can know the colour of their own hat? and why?

Remember:

Solid wall blocking the 4th guy, they cannot communicate with each other, they can shout out if they know the right answer and they know there are 2 red and 2 black hats.

I- o> o> o> [] o>

the second (or third which ever way you look at it) knows the colour of his hat cuz if him and the person in front were wearing the same colour hat then the person behind him would have guessed his hat colour correctly but if the person in front and himself had different colour hats then the person behind him wouldnt be able to guess the colour of his hat

The man on the other side of the wall can know nothing.
The man immediately in front of the wall can know nothing.
The man at the back could know what colour his hat was if the two in front of him were wearing the same colour, but as they aren't, he cannot know anything.
The man in the middle realises that the man at the back does not know what colour his hat his. This means the man at the back must be seeing a black and a red, as the man in front has a red hat on, then the man in the middle knows his is black. (assuming you're counting hostages 1 and 3 from left to right!)

The first hostage can say he knows that 2 has a black and 3 has a red.... I guess he can guess if he has the red or black he knows there is only 1 red and 1 black left but idk thats all i got =[

wait maybe the guy on the other side of the wall? and How do you know that on the wall is a mirror because then #3 would know his color but if theirs no one on the other side of the wall then maybe he could fond out his color????
