Ultimate Guitarist Poll

???

No offense, but i take it that you either....

1. Dont understand the main purpose of this poll.
2. You dont give a sh*t and instead go by your favorite as a form of protest against those who make a big deal out of technical ability.

Which one is it?

how the hell is emotion moot?

Being great, to a certain point, is about personal preference. When I hear Zakk play (especially live) it blows me away, he amazes me with technical ability AS WELL AS the emotion he uses (see book of shadows for reference).
Petrucci does absolutely nothing for me, like Malmsteen. He's fast, as all hell, but when he plays it's like he's saying, "hey look how fast and perfect I can play" whereas with other guitar players whom I like it's like, "hey, this is how I was feeling at the time I played and recorded this."
The corabination of emotion and ability is rare IMO.

But then again, David Gilmour is one of my favorite guitar players ever; and that has nothing to do with technical ability or speed.

Note that nobody's really said anything about complexity aside from you. We're just naming off some of our favourite guitarists and you're basically going around telling people they're stupid because the guitarists they like don't play complex music.

Kurt Kobain? ...

I went with David Gilmour, out of that list. His guitar sounRAB really silvery and fluid. I'm sure he isn't anywhere near the best technically speaking.

mick taylor he is the one that made the stones the rockers they became in the 70's he helped them go to an all time high and helped write there best material. one of the most underrated guitar players to walk this earth.

i had to choose one so hailing from texas i gave it up to SRV. it was really a 3 way tie between SRV, Jimi Hendrix, and Satriani in my books. Jimmy Page being in the top 10 of course along with BB King and Eric Clapton.

boo-boo,
I must say that i admire you. You brought forth good points, and I can definitley see the logic behind your thinking. And i DO believe that what kind of rig you have affects the tone.
Still...I stand strong behind my opinion.
I still believe that real tone is in the fingers.
Scientifically (i guess), I would say this has to do with a nuraber of things. Not so much HOW you play, but how your FINGERS play. Such as:
-The thickness of your fingers
-The thickness of your skin
-The texture of your skin
-The length of your finger (determining what part of your
finger plays which string)

These are just some of the things that I thought could change tone. It would have effect on the muddiness/darkness/brightness/etc...
Then again, maybe I am wrong. Maybe I am wrong and right.

1. Hendrix
2. Page
3. Eddy Van Halen
4. Clapton
5. Tom Morello
6. Buckethead
7. Slash
8. Mark Knophler
9. Randy RhoaRAB
10. Kirk Hammett

Agree?
11 would be the gutiarist from Slipknot. Can't remeraber his name. :P

No it's not...it seems to make perfect sense to me, i don't think he belongs in a greatest guitarist thread, yes, he influenced an entire generation so why not put him in the greatest singer thread? because he was far from it...just like he's far from the greatest guitarist of all time.
he just wasn't...can't be compared with someone like Hendrix as a guitarist.
