Ultimate Guide To Folding@home

It's not the position you are in that's important...it's the fact that you're doing it...thats what's important!

This is great, the team is growing larger, every day... :)

I've just joined in the fun...

Cpu=P4 2,5

Errr, dumb question: I've got a laptop so I won't let it on 24/7 (more like 16 hours a day) because I don't want it to overheat... Is that bad?

lol lynx and ariel u guyz dont need to do all tht....

just download the FAH ONE-CLICK and edit the .cfg and put ur name...and with one click it will installl as a service...

(i use this for borging other computers  ;) )

LINKS:

To Install Folding the easiest and fastest way on a Windows XP/W2K machine, use the One-Click Install:

If you are running XP/XP Home/W2K(all versions) on a single cpu computer, do this:

1. Download the One-Click FAH Install (New Client and New Core)here .
2. Unzip the file to a floppy or to a directory (folder) on the desktop.
3. Edit the client.cfg with notepad and change "Wedo" to your folding username. Only use notepad to edit the client.cfg as WordPad, Word, or any other word processing program will mess up your config file!
4. Click the .exe file.

Poof, your folding.

To get other's to fold for you with this:

Download the zip file, edit the client.cfg using notepad, re-zip the file, email the .zip file to everyone and talk them through unzip and click of the .exe file.

or....

Copy the .exe and edited client.cfg to a floppy/cdrom/pen drive and give them to everyone on the planet (except me, I already have it).

You get the idea....

To Install Folding the easiest and fastest way on a Dual CPU or a P4 with HT machine running Windows XP or W2K:

You will do everything noted in the above section except use the Dually/HT version of the One-Click:

The Dually version, OC-FAH-Dually.exe can be downloaded here .

The only other change is that there are two client.cfg files to edit, both of which need your username (again, use notepad to edit this file). The client.cfg's have different names, but don't worry, when you hit the .exe after editing the One-Click changes the names of the files and copies them into the correct directories.

Win9x One-Click
Download it here

Ugh, im 13th.

Computer was down all day and last night, so lets hope some 24/7 duty will get me back on track, and as soon as my flash drive arrives, she is going to be putting F@H on a bunch of computers.

btw i noe y bigdawgfox has so many WUs he went to his school..
Wrong, if that was the case, it would be saying more than just 1 active processor in Bigdawg's profile.

He has so many WU's because he overclocked unstably, and was bouncing WU's instead of completing them, they finish one frame, and fail and send in the work to the server, this, a WU is done, but no points are recieved, and a new WU is downloaded.

Woot!!! i needed something to keep my cpu warm and here it is thanks guys practicle and i am yhelping poeple wow very nice... it will vae to compete with muy other one that is tryong to calcuate and find other alien species... on other planets... :01:

Ive joined and now working under the name TRshady :)

Proud to be able to help ... though I really dont see how this works ...

Have a 1.5ghz comp running ..... 24/7 :D

You've only got one processor, but some parts of it are duplicated. These are the simpler components which don't produce much heat, such as the main instruction path, the arithmetic unit etc.

It has to report that it has 2 processors so that windows can schedule it to execute 2 tasks simultaneously. That effectively means that with two tasks which for the most part only use the duplicated parts you can get more performance out of the chip.

Unfortunately F@H mainly uses parts which aren't duplicated - the MME stuff and the FPU. These are complex units and produce large amounts of heat, which is why they aren't duplicated. So although you could have 2 copies of the program scheduled to run, in practice they would be waiting for the shared resources to be free.

There's even a down side to HT when you want to run another program, even with only one copy running. Windows sees that it has a spare "processor" which can run your prog, it doesn't know about the shared resources. So windows schedules your prog and doesn't bother interrupting the other FPU/MME intensive prog. If your prog uses the duplicated parts there's no problem, but if it uses the shared parts then it runs like a dog.

Nice one Intel - how to slow down our systems by not thinking out the problem. Nothing new there then.

Any 1 havin' probs.I have a error cant connect to work server(results).I think my firwalls messed up. :)
It happens some times if the server is down for maintenance. As long as you can get another WU you don't have firewall problems. The completed WU will go eventually.
