Hi guys, for copyright reasons the GMail extension was never originally allowed in the UK then GMail was first launched. Now it looks like it's sorted and everyone I know has a link that allows them to activate @gmail.com as well as still running @googlemail.com

The problem I'm now having is that my "Talk" app won't sign in (everything else is fine)

If I change my account on my phone to [email protected] will it affect anything? (my phone is currently logged in as [email protected])

on a slightly different note. i'm from the UK and have had a Google mail account for years...

i have, even though my account is [email protected] i have always used [email protected] and it has always come through to me.... i am slightly confused why i should now change it to be officially gmail rather than googlemail?... i always thought it was just personal preference which one you used?!

no, I was never allowed to use gmail.com
when I log into anything google, I just put the bit before the "@" and it filled the rest in with googlemail.com rather than gmail.com
now I'm wondering if there will be any side effects of logging in to my phone with gmail rather than googlemail

no i never type the @gmail/ @googlemail bit either but when i have handed out my email address i always give out @gmail.com.... and i get all of them

From UK here too, and always had a @gmail.com address since GMail first appeared. However my partner has an @googlemail.com address. She got hers about 3 years ago maybe.

ahhh... you reminded me.

I was one of the original people invited by google to test their gmail emails in the UK... i think that people who were around from that period were all gmail and then it changed to googlemail... sound right to anyone?

Sounds right to me. I (with a gmail.com address) was on GMail from an invite from one of the beta testers. I believe my partner got hers just by signing up (no invite needed).

To answer the OP...

You could test it? I've posted instructions on here a few times on how to change the GMail account associated with your phone without having to factory reset by going to:

Menu -> Settings -> Applications -> Manage applications... Then from here do the following three in order:
Google Mail -> Clear data
Google Mail Storage -> Clear data
Google Apps -> Clear data

Then run the GMail app and it will ask you for your login details again.

Maybe clear the IM for Talk data or whatever it's called in there too.

Cheers, didnt work though, it just resynced. I've also noticed today I have to force emails to send or receive.

Very annoying. I've tried emails to gmail.com before but it never worked, it may for some of you but never has for me.

for those who know nothing about googlemail rather than gmail here's google's new page about it

I've managed to switch mine back to googlemail, hopefully it will work now

Hrm - just tried that here and it asks me for my GMail login details again.

Wasn't there some way to run the setup wizard again with Anycut?

Cheers guys, they should put that on the page when you switch it. The mail app is affected too, I replicated it on another android phone with a different account. I have put it back to googlemail now and everything works
