UK Photography buffs .. your recommendations .... ?

Have had several compact digital cameras over the years and currently using a Canon Ixus 750. Now looking to upgrade to a digital SLR and would like people's opinion on what is decent kit including recommendations on what body to buy and what lenses for all round use. Need to consider portrait shots, scenes such as churches and the occasional close up for say jewellery on Ebay etc. Also, where would you source these items to keep the price competitive. Thanks ...
Looking up to about £400 if necessary ..
