I have a Vodafone mobile broadband account as a backup in case my home line goes down. The first dongle they sent me didn't work at all, and the replacement gave me one bar of signal strength (out of five). A friend showed me to put the mobile account sim card in an old phone (a Samsung Soul if that matters) and connect it to my laptop with a USB cable. That gives me three bars, which is just about OK - very slow but I can just about manage to work with it in an emergency.
Today I needed to do some work on my laptop while at another friend's house, but there I was back down to one bar, which is not enough to work with (via Citrix), so I just had to come home. My phone, which is also on Vodafone, works OK at my friend's house, and it's not out in the countryside or anything, it's on the edge of a city.
I already have Vodafone's best mobile broadband package. As it only just works in my house and doesn't seem to work at all elsewhere, it hardly seems worth having. Is there anything I can do to get it working better?
