UK driving laws, off road quad bikes?

I do not intend to drive on a public road at any point. There are wide open forests near by and I would like to go for a drive around there. The woods are open to the public.

Can anyone tell me if the quads have to be taxed, insured and possess an MOT pass certificate? (Remember, off-road only)

I have a full UK driving licence (passed test this year, so still only 6 points), if I need insurance/TAX etc, then I highly doubt I will purchase them, as I only drive them on rare occasion. If I am caught doing so by the police, is anyone aware what the penalty would be?

Thanks.

How are you going to get from where you live to the woods? The forestry commission/national trust might not take kindly to you using a quad bike. On Private land you can do what you like!
If you go on the road you will need everything.
