u740 versus Moto Q

I have a Samsung u740 (the one that flips both ways) and I had decided that tomorrow morning I was going to go switch to a Black Q, but I have been reading about having to have a data plan, etc... Before I got the u740 I had a Treo but didn't have data plan so what gives - do you or don't you?

The rep at store said it (the q) would try to connect to the internet all the time.. I've never had one so what do they mean?

I've got a Q with no data plan, it doesn't seem to be connecting to the internet all the time for me...

Sounds like the rep doesn't know what they're talking about or just wants you to buy the data plan.
